Abstract
An examination of the relations between pol'al structure, ideology, & ED. The main proposition is stated as: 'if modernizing societies are to undergo rapid industr'ization, then we must expect this to occur within the context of a high degree of totalitarianism, esp in a one-party state having a leadership of a messianic or charismatic sort. Moreover, the kind of ideology the charismatic leader supports contains elements that transcend divergent cultural systems.' Societies are divided into folk, feudal, industr'ized-Ur & modernizing & transitional. The nature, ideology & functions of charismatic leadership in transitional societies are examined, & it is noted that this leadership may be challenged by countervailing tendencies, eg democracy, which introduce complexities & tensions.
