Perfekte Volkermissverstandigung: Wie Massenmedien und Tourismus das Bild voin der Dritten Welt pragen
In: Journal für Entwicklungspolitik, Band 6, Heft 3, S. 5-23
Abstract
Recent development assistance campaigns & the role of the media (newspapers & TV) as agents of socialization are discussed in an investigation of Austrian attitudes toward the Third World (TW). Results of a 1990 representative survey (N unspecified) show that: 33% expressed racist attitudes; & 50% categorized TW dependence on industrialized countries as an important cause of problems. Exoticism, racism, & xenophobia are found to be fostered by media-created images & patterns of tourism. The possibility that education serves to counteract the effects of the mass media is explored in light of the finding that young people -- who tend to view the TW as a place where misery predominates, & who read fewer newspapers & watch fewer news programs than their elders -- have not yet surrendered their willingness to help others to the powerlessness felt by adults. 53 References.
