Abstract

Based on acknowledgment of the conflictive character of the ideals on which a liberal democracy should be based, a reflection on the crisis of the ethical foundations of realistic democracy is set out. In this context, the question of whether political democracy must coexist with a capitalist economic system is explored. It is argued that part of the political realism of democracy is to acknowledge the negative effects deriving from the connection between democracy & the market. The triumph of liberal democracy, understood as the victory of certain types of ideals, permeates not only neoconservative thought, but also progressivist social-democratic thought. A radically different ethical foundation for a realistic democracy is sought in the social utopia of communication as present in Jurgen Habermas's thought. 16 References. R. Jaramillo
