Potential Future Functions of the World Trade Organization
In: Global governance: a review of multilateralism and international organizations, Band 15, Heft 3
Abstract
Considers the WTO's growing global influence and responsibilities, particularly in the face of regionalism's growing influence, a point which possibly undermines the WTO's very raison d'etre. Begins with reasons for possibly expanding the WTO agenda, from a governmental perspective, such as modifying the conditions of competition or enhancing efficiency. Necessary to the WTO's future success will necessitate closer and better relations with other international groups, a mandate of the Marrakesh agreement, the genesis of the WTO. Furthermore, considers the level and actions of trade liberalization within the organization, along with its role as a serious place to affect trade negotiations, versus mere verbiage. Finally, considers the hindrances and changes towards decision making, verging on the concept of critical mass. Adapted from the source document.
