Abstract
In this Top Twenty Commentaries section of the Centennial Issues of the journal, the Karl W. Deutsch reviews his highly cited article Social Mobilization & Political Development(1961).The importance of the article to a transnational generation of scholars of comparative politics & international is delineated in terms of Deutsch's theory of nationalism through social mobilization of repressed ethnic & social groups. A brief biography traces the author's humanistic education as a European intellectual, & the study of mathematics that impacted his use of data as "aids to political judgment, not as substitutes for it." The article's focus on aggregate data is asserted to account for the drop in citations over the last five years, but is concluded to be an important artifact of the intellectual history of political science.
