Abstract

Examines relationships between local, national, & global identifications of political leaders & their promotion of the democratic values of political equality, popular participation in politics, pluralism, & tolerance of conflicts. Interview data gathered 1991-1995 from local political leaders in randomly selected communities of 25 countries underpin an exploration of processes of democratization assumed to be embedded in local politics, linked to global processes, & facilitated by democratic values. 4 Tables, 15 Figures, 8 References.
