Abstract

Interviews Italian political philosopher Michelangelo Bovero on the tension between philosophical debate & political reality in contemporary European international politics. Bovero addresses the widespread belief in an ideological crisis in Europe following the end of the Cold War, where the continent is still very much in the complicated process of defining itself politically through new treaties & treaty restructuring. He argues that the term ideological crisis is too simplistic, & that "crisis" implies a historical point of truth & stability that actually never existed in Europe. He discusses, however, an unprecedented sense of community & community action on the local level in some Western European countries. His stance is predominantly Rawlsian as he explores the gaps between cultural & political expression in contemporary Europe, & he contends that even the most respected contemporary political philosophers, namely Jurgen Habermas, are unable to maintain connection with political reality.
