Transitions in Latin America on the Threshold of the 1990s
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 43, S. 285-300
Abstract
The transition to democracy in the last two decades in Latin America is conceived of as part of the larger democratization process in countries under the influence of Western cultural tradition, & as rooted in liberalization, the imposition of a market economy, & a democratic rebuilding process. The effects of these factors on different Latin American countries have meant transition through either liberalization, pact agreement, free elections, or autonomy of the armed forces. The resulting democratic forms are unlike those of the First World, but the regimes commissioned to restore or establish democracy have survived in spite of acute economic problems. The long-term results are far from clear. 1 Table, 3 Photographs. M. Pflum
