Abstract

Assesses the extent to which young Indochinese refugees in Finland are moving away from the values & culture of their parents, & to what extent this creates intergenerational conflicts & emotional stress. Interview data from 159 young refugees born in 1969-1976 & 1,212 of their parents/caregivers, suggest that the amount of self-reported anxiety & depression tend to increase in both generations with length of stay in Finland; symptoms are greater among females than males. Time in the resettlement country also clearly affects the ethnic self-perception of youth, but not that of adults, increasing generational strain & emotional stress. 7 Tables, 62 References.
