Introduction
Abstract
This introduction to Power and Civil Society in Pakistan looks at the numerous crises that Pakistan has faced in the contemporary era: (1) Pakistan was headed by eight different governments during the period 1988-1999. (2) corruption has been rampant. (3) Pakistan's level of human development remains among the lowest in the world. These crises find their basis in the historical legacy of the country. The following chapters all address power in Pakistani society, focusing on the broad themes of civil society; the social foundations of power; the power structure of political, economic, & legal elements; & issues & actors within Pakistani power negotiations. It is hoped that in focusing on these topics, this book will open & broaden dialogue on Pakistan among scholars & social activists. K. Larsen
