Ma solution pour le probleme de Chypre
In: Politique internationale: pi, Heft 118, S. 325-345
Abstract
In this exclusive interview, the president of the Republic of Cyprus takes an in-depth look at prospects for the settlement of the Cyprus question. Tassos Papadopoulos had campaigned against the Annan plan in 2004, saying that it would perpetuate the separation of the island & give the Turkish invader the permanent right to take military action anywhere on Cyprus. At the time, he garnered the support of 76% of voters. Today, with the first round of the presidential election around the corner, Papadopoulos has sustained his popularity rating, undoubtedly due to his firm opposition to Ankara. Unlike the Turks, who are in favor of the creation of two separate but equal entities, Papadopoulos will only consider a solution involving the real reunification of the island. He hopes that the European Union will use all its influence to make Turkey see things this way, without awaiting the hypothetical conclusion of negotiations for Turkey's membership in the EU.
