Abstract

Examines issues in the new German government's asylum & refugee policies that offer hope for future improvements. Government attitudes toward a European asylum & human rights policy are discussed. Policies for settling older asylum & hardship cases, & for reexamining the length of detention for deportation, airport procedures, gender-specific reasons for pursuit, & situational reports of the Foreign Ministry, are assessed. It is concluded that, while asylum policies are not an issue of concern for the new coalition, if it can pass a new right to citizenship law without losses in state elections, then an opportunity to improve these policies will present itself.
