Librarians find themselves continuously challenged to provide a growing range of innovative services. In order to succeed, this complex task is grounded in local context and implemented based on the needs of users, be it students, patrons, clients, or community members. This article considers parameters of and discusses strategies for developing library services to meet the needs of incarcerated youth. How can librarians be effective in serving these young people who have been drawn into atypical realms, away from their communities, away from the Internet? There is a clear and urgent need to provide excellent library services to the approximately 60,000 youth incarcerated across the U. S. Currently, there are groups that emphasize services to these users. For example, Library Services for Youth in Custody (LSYC) is a professional interest group that focuses on providing a network to support these services. Other agencies are also involved, often as part of outreach programs, special projects, or on an ad-hoc basis. Together, these efforts result in a patchwork of services. In this case study, we draw on the experience of several dedicated individuals and groups that work to form a patchwork for building awareness, sharing resources, and meeting the informational needs of incarcerated youth. We critically consider these matters in theory and practice while reflecting back on the ten years of providing library services at a youth detention facility located in the U.S. Midwest; like many similar facilities, it has no librarian, no other library staff, and no regular library budget.

Contends that access to medical care for HIV-positive refugees in Egypt is severely hindered by the stigma associated with the disease. The unique vulnerability of refugees to HIV is pointed out, along with attempts to avoid highlighting the risks for fear that governments would resist accepting refugees; & the unwillingness of countries already overburdened with HIV/AIDS to include refugees in their national AIDS policies. In Ontario, many individuals who speak and read languages other than English or French use government services. This major research project explores how to make services more accessible for populations who speak and read English as a second language. Following an analysis of services currently available, participatory design methods with Chinese speakers who do not read or speak English showed how written language can be augmented or replaced with animations, sound, and representations of physical objects (such as automobiles, forms, drivers licenses, and license plates) to deliver services to audiences from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Initial prototyping suggests that 'realistic' or 'visual' representations can effectively augment or replace written language when the aim is to convey something that is concrete, such as an automobile or license plate. When the aim is to convey something that is slightly less concrete, such a car or home, outline drawings can be effective. However, certain aspects of government services, such as legal disclaimers or privacy information, are more difficult to convey without written language, suggesting that writing can be minimized, but not eliminated completely.

In Greece, the training system and education can be adapted to distance lifelong e-learning and the teachers, the society and the economy can be benefited via the introduction and training of in-service teachers in (a) the Video Conferencing (VC) technology and mode of distant training, granted that VC is put into a learning framework, and (b) Knowledge Management (KM) methodology, through lectures and seminars. Incidentally, VC technology and KM methodology can be integrated into in-service teacher distance lifelong training and development, and to this end, an example, a hybrid model, of the manner VC technology and KM methodology can be integrated into in-service teacher distance lifelong training and development, that is, a microteaching session via VC and KM, which is advisable for Greek teachers of all specialisations in Greece or abroad, is given.

This paper explores the sustainability of non-government organisations (NGOs) providing services to older people in the local government authority area of North Sydney. It identifies several key issues that can be used to assess the level of programme sustainability in the community sector. We suggest that government support is essential for the ongoing financial sustainability of community aged care services and that community-based organisations need to address a number of issues that will impact on their long-term sustainability. A good working relationship with local and state government is crucial for organisations to access community grants, donations and subsidised premises. The recruitment, training and retention of volunteers were some of the most important issues identified. Further, these NGOs will need to develop strategic plans that factor in sustainability indicators to address rental, recycling, transport, renewable energy and water costs to ensure that they have the capacity to pay for these utilities in the future.
