We consider the relationship between how a firm serves foreign markets and performance, using survey data on manufacturing and services firms for African countries. Results for manufacturing industries indicate a clear productivity ordering with firms undertaking outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) performing best, followed by exporters and domestically oriented firms. Results for services firms are more nuanced, indicating that while exporters and firms undertaking outward FDI are more productive than domestically oriented firms, there is no significant difference in productivity between these two types of firms (some evidence suggests that the productivity of exporters is larger than that for firms undertaking outward FDI). AbstractPolicymakers face a dilemma over their investment‐promotion strategies for becoming more competitive in international markets. Encouraging firms to invest abroad could reduce domestic economic activity. We investigate this issue by analysing the long‐ and short‐run relationships between outward foreign direct investment and domestic investment for Brazil and China. We use a time series approach, namely autoregressive distributed lag for the period between 1975 and 2013. Our findings indicate a crowding‐in effect of outward foreign direct investment on domestic investment for both countries. Copyright © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The surge in outward foreign direct investment (FDI) by Indian firms in the past ten to fifteen years raises a host of interesting questions. This edited volume is a valuable resource for all scholars interested in India's emerging multinational enterprises. The contributors explore the rapid growth of Indian multinationals and provide valuable insights into the patterns and trends of their outward investments and the factors that led to their emergence in the global FDI market. They also look at their continuously evolving strategies the in global economy and what the outcome has been for their host country in trade, technology, and employment.

AbstractThis paper investigates the economic and institutional determinants of Taiwan's outward direct investment in six Southeast Asian countries from 1998 to 2017, applying the panel ARDL–Pooled Mean Group estimation. We specially examine the effects of institutional quality with five dimensions inclusively, using the Worldwide Governance Indicators. The results show the locational economic factors are the primary determinants in the long run. The tight and historic trading relation with Southeast Asia has a long‐run positive effect. On the contrary, the institutional quality of the host countries has strong positive effects in both the long run and short run. Further, the paper displays the dynamics of this investment in the last 20 years. These results are important for Taiwan and Southeast Asia policy‐makers in setting up the short‐run and long‐run policies to sustain their diversified economic growth.

This article discusses in detail the relevant mechanisms that affect the development of Chinese outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). It first describes the current situation in China and the influences these mechanisms have on the development of OFDI. It then points out current problems, discusses the effects of those problems, and illustrates the roles of the relevant mechanisms. China's foreign direct investment in Canada is growing, which has increased the economic ties between the two countries, but Chinese enterprises are facing strengthened scrutiny in the acquisition of Canadian companies. This article also examines the practices and experiences of other countries in this field and presents suggestions and ideas on how to establish and improve the mechanisms in the growth of Chinese transnational corporations.
