Basierend auf einer Podiumsdiskussion auf dem 5. Deutschen Psychologentag in Berlin 1999 werden Konsequenzen internationaler Studienabschlüsse für die Psychologie in Studium und Beruf dargestellt. Folgende Punkte werden diskutiert: (1) Forderungen der Deutschen Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, (2) Struktur von Bachelor- und Masterabschlüssen, (3) gesellschaftliche Kritikpunkte an der derzeitigen Bildungssituation, (4) neue Anforderungen an Studium und Weiterbildung, (5) Verordnungen zur Liberalisierung ergänzender Studiengänge, (6) Orientierung an Entwicklungen im europäischen Ausland, (7) zunehmende Internationalisierung und Akademisierung, (8) das European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), (9) politische Bedingungen, (10) Studiengänge im Vergleich, (11) Fragen an das Psychologiestudium und (12) künftige Aufgaben der Hochschulen.

Der Autor betont, dass heute wieder mehr von Elite gesprochen werden sollte und diese (auch im Bildungsbereich) gefördert werden soll. Sie ermöglicht es einem rohstoffarmen Land wie der Bundesrepublik, im globalen Wettbewerb mithalten zu können. Voraussetzungen sind, entsprechende Begabungen rechtzeitig, also beginnend in der Schule, zu suchen und zu finden, zu fördern und zu fordern. Private Einrichtungen, so belebend sie für die Hochschullandschaft sein können, sind häufig wenig glaubwürdig, führen zu der Gefahr, elitäres Standesbewusstsein zu fördern. Vielmehr sollten sich Leistungseliten an staatlichen Hochschulen im Wettbewerb herausbilden und dort gefördert und gefordert werden. (HoF/Text übernommen).

The article discusses the relevance of textbooks at Australian universities for learning European and Asian languages (especially Japanese). It is noted that few language textbooks are designed with an eye to context. (DÜI-Sen)

The author points out that the performance of Australian business in East and Southeast Asia is less than outstanding. He suggests ways to improve this performance. He thinks that the universities in Australia do need to increase their capacity to provide good, general, business-oriented education with a strong backbone of study in the language, history and culture of an Asian region. The need for some form of institutional backing is discussed for the effective co-ordination of the university system's resources in Asian studies with the need for a process by which the needs of business in Asia can be identified, solutions proposed and then marketed. According to the author, much has been said in recent years about the financing of education in mainland China. Most of the discussion has centred on insufficient funding, which is presumably to blame for problems such as low pay for teachers and inadequate school facilities. The paper examines the mechanism of financing education on the mainland and argues the problem is not merely one of underfunding, but stems from more complicated problems in the economic and political environment. After describing the evolution of education in mainland China, the article analyses education investment, estimates the contribution of education investment to economic development and measures the productivity of education. It is suggested that the government respects intellectuals and improves their salaries in order to improve teacher quality and, in turn, the quality of education. (DÜI-Sen)

The article presents an historical overview of the major developments in undergraduate education, graduate education, and non-traditional forms of higher education, during the first decade following the Cultural Revolution. A commentary of the significance of 1985 "Decision on the Reform of the Education System", which has introduced a number of new initiatives designed to make Chinese higher education more responsive to the needs of the new historical period, is also provided. Weiterhin werden verschiedene Modelle zum Finden besonderer Begabungen angesprochen und gewertet; abschließend wird ein Ausblick auf die Perspektiven der Entwicklung der Eliten in Wissenschaft und Verwaltung gegeben. Critical assesssment of the PRC's educational system, its performance and its prospects. The major change in educational policies since 1976 has been the gradual shift towards the view that education should respond to the needs of the economy. The implementation of the new educational reforms handicapped by the legacy of past policies. One very harmful aspect of past policies - the low qualification of the teaching staff.
