This classroom resource provides clear, concise scientific information in an understandable and enjoyable way about water and aquatic life. Spanning the hydrologic cycle from rain to watersheds, aquifers to springs, rivers to estuaries, ample illustrations promote understanding of important concepts and clarify major ideas.Aquatic science is covered comprehensively, with relevant principles of chemistry, physics, geology, geography, ecology, and biology included throughout the text. Emphasizing water sustainability and conservation, the book tells us what we can do personally to conserve for t
Adequate infrastructure for citizen science is constantly growing and has become increasingly important in providing support to citizen science activities, both nationally and internationally. Many types of citizen science infrastructures exist, with different functionalities. This chapter focuses on current citizen science platforms. The platforms addressed in this chapter are those which display citizen science data and information, provide good practical examples and toolkits, collect relevant scientific outcomes, and are accessible to different stakeholders, ranging from interested citizens to scientific institutions to authorities, politicians, and public media. We present current citizen science platforms in Europe and associated (inter)national citizen science networks and discuss how these platforms have become increasingly vital within citizen science. Based on these examples, we elaborate on challenges for citizen science platforms, such as establishing and financing platforms, designing user interfaces, maintaining platforms, promoting the usage of platforms, etc. We conclude with an outlook into potential development needs of citizen science platforms in the future. ; publishedVersion

Each year we have the honor to publish an article version of the APSA Presidential Address. In the six years we have done this John Ishiyama is the first comparativist whose work we have featured in this capacity. He presently holds an appointment as University Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas. John has long been a fixture in the subfield of comparative politics for his contributions on democratization, political parties, and ethnic politics in both the post-Soviet region and Africa. He has also written extensively on teaching, publishing, and assessment in political science. He has published over 150 articles. And while the outlets and subject matter are too diverse to summarize succinctly, we do want to mention that "The Politics of Intercountry Adoption: Explaining Variation in the Legal Requirements of Sub-Saharan African Countries," coauthored with Marijke Breuning, won the 2010 APSA Heinz Eulau Award for Best Journal Article published in Perspectives on Politics during the previous year (2009).

REA's Essentials provide quick and easy access to critical information in a variety of different fields, ranging from the most basic to the most advanced. As its name implies, these concise, comprehensive study guides summarize the essentials of the field covered. Essentials are helpful when preparing for exams, doing homework and will remain a lasting reference source for students, teachers, and professionals. Political Science covers the major political developments that have shaped the American government today. Includes ancient theories such as Secularism, and modern theories such as Marxi

Scientific reproducibility and Open Science may seem like a "new" approach to Science, but these concepts are in fact fundamental principles of the Scientific Method, established a thousand years ago. By definition, scientists want to follow the Scientific Method. Then why have different studies demonstrated that researchers have difficulties reproducing even their own methods? Clues can be found in a system where science is being drowned by numerical ranking, favouring productivity over discovery. Given the current epoch of economic crisis, where researchers are forced into a competitive game of pandering to panelists in quests for funds, it seems to be a good time for deep reflection on the entire scientific system, and on how to support good ideas versus good marketing. The challenge will be harder when facilities like the Square Kilometre Array Observatory start generating data volumes reaching the exa-scale. Not only will computing, networking or storage resources reach their limits, but the biggest challenge will be scientific: Extracting knowledge will become an impossible task without a fundamental change in methodology and policies in the short-term. Computing facilities enabling science in Big Data oriented facilities should be key in supporting astronomers to build reproducible methods. I will discuss how different research communities (such as individual researchers, large collaborations, data centres, journals and their referees) as well as policy makers, view the challenges/barriers and rewards of reproducibility. For scientific facilities, adoption of Open Science is both a need and a duty. Open Science not only enhances scientific collaboration and knowledge interchange in a transparent way. It also brings a wider impact in other areas, by encouraging the democratisation of science, contributing to achieving UN's Sustainable Development Goals. With this talk I aim to provoke extra critical thinking among the different actors involved in our system (applicants for jobs/grants, referees, or ...
