In den letzten Jahren haben Debatten über die Positionalität von Forscher*innen in akademischen Kreisen zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen. Trotz dieser verstärkten Fokussierung auf Fragen nach der Auswirkung von deren Anwesenheit auf den Forschungsprozess und -ergebnis gibt es weiterhin Themen, die tendenziell gemieden werden, so etwa die Auswirkung von Alkohol auf den Forschungsprozess. In vorliegenden Veröffentlichungen werden zwar verschiedene Aspekte in Bezug darauf erörtert, wie Forschende mit Alkoholkonsum während der Feldforschung umgehen. Es wird jedoch nicht auf die Rolle von Religion eingegangen, eine bemerkenswerte Lücke angesichts der Prävalenz religiöser Gründe für Abstinenz. In diesem Artikel bauen wir daher auf vorhandene Literatur auf und diskutieren zwei Fallstudien mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Religion, die dazu beitragen, das Verständnis der Rolle von Alkoholkonsum und Abstinenz während der Feldforschung zu vertiefen. Basierend auf einem kollaborativen autoethnografischen Ansatz sowie unseren Feldforschungserfahrungen als muslimische Frau im Libanon und christlicher Mann in Vietnam diskutieren wir, wie Religion das Verhältnis mit Forschungsteilnehmenden sowie Insider-/Outsider-Dynamiken während der Feldforschung beeinflusst. Wir schließen mit Empfehlungen, wie akademische Einrichtungen Studierende und Mitarbeiter*innen (unabhängig von deren [nicht-] religiöser Identität) besser unterstützen können, wenn es darum geht, mit Alkoholkonsum während der Feldforschung - und darüber hinaus - umzugehen.

"Mitte November 2003 (14.-15.11.2003) organisierte das Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften, Abteilung Informationstransfer Osteuropa, einen Workshop zum Thema 'The East European Social Sciences: Research Conditions and the Role of Information/Communication'. Sozialwissenschaftler aus dreizehn mittelost- und osteuropäischen Ländern diskutierten Probleme der Informationsversorgung der Sozialwissenschaftler in Osteuropa und Möglichkeiten der Unterstützung durch die GESIS Servicestelle Osteuropa. Basis der Workshop-Diskussion bildete ein vom IZ entwickelter Fragen-Leitfaden zu den Forschungsbedingungen und zur Informationsversorgung der osteuropäischen Sozialwissenschaftler, anhand dessen die Teilnehmer im Vorfeld des Workshops schriftliche Statements (country reports) abgaben. Enlightenment beliefs in progress, development, growth, civilizing process and evolution have played a central role in the history of social science. After two world wars, influential scholars like Horkheimer, Adorno and Gehlen came to question Enlightenment premises. Science could no longer be taken as the paradigmatic human activity, as an activity that discovers truth. Yet, in spite of what such critical scientists had declared, enlightenment beliefs persisted in much scientific work. In this article, I endeavour to show to what extent Enlightenment premises underlie and permeate in the works of social scientists, and how the different political attitudes and mentalities of scientists are intricately related to different manifestations of such beliefs. This article provides a narrative of illustrative scholarly works, to show how such different attitudes and mentalities have shaped the making of social science throughout the history of modern politics. The purpose of such an overview of scientists is to rethink the vocation of social science in general, and political science in particular, by problematizing the relationship between science and Enlightenment premises – a relationship that, it is argued, has become more ambiguous in the current epoch.

This article describes and analyzes the process of institutionalizing studies on science, technology, and society (STS) in Cuba, and the social and academic circumstances in which these studies are implemented there. The authors give a brief account of how science and technology have evolved in Cuba over the last four decades. The authors argue that the promotion of science and technological innovation in Cuba has purposely taken the form of social innovation. The authors offer our view of how the changes and demands on science, technology, and education can take advantage of the approaches and proposals of STS studies. The authors consider the traditions of thought that have influenced Cuban culture and construct a specific conceptual framework through which contemporary developments in STS are assimilated. Finally, on the basis of the above analysis, the authors describe experiences of the institutionalization of STS and their underlying objectives.

Auf dem Wege der Vergleichsgruppenuntersuchung unter "Normal- und Problemjugendlichen" in der DDR versucht die Studie herauszufinden, "in welcher Ausprägung das sozialistische Recht und die Rechtsordnung zur Wertorientierung der Jugendlichen gehören". Es geht dabei vor allem um den Zusammenhang von Gefährdungs- und Lebenssituation. Bei den "Problemjugendlichen" handelt es sich u.a. um gefährdete Lehrlinge und jugendliche Strafgefangene. Insgesamt wurden 1970 Jugendliche im Alter von 15 bis 19 Jahren befragt und 16 Falldarstellungen über gefährdete Lehrlinge angefertigt. Untersucht wurden u.a. die Elternbeziehungen und Arbeitsbeziehungen der Jugendlichen, deren Alkoholerfahrungen und Trinkverhalten, die Mediennutzung sowie die persönlichen Besitzverhältnisse. Spezielle Untersuchungen widmeten sich dem Antwortverhalten bei fiktiven Fällen sowie Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen im Bereich des Gefährdungsverhaltens. (psz)

This article focuses on epistemic challenges related to the democratisation of scientific knowledge production, and to the limitations of current social accounts of objectivity. A process of 'democratisation' can be observed in many scientific and academic fields today. Collaboration with extra-academic agents and the use of extra-academic expertise and knowledge has become common, and researchers are interested in promoting socially inclusive research practices. As this development is particularly prevalent in policy-relevant research, it is important that the new, more democratic forms of research be objective. In social accounts of objectivity only epistemic communities are taken to be able to produce objective knowledge, or the entity whose objectivity is to be assessed is precisely such a community. As I argue, these accounts do not allow for situations where it is not easy to identify the relevant epistemic community. Democratisation of scientific knowledge production can lead to such situations. As an example, I discuss attempts to link indigenous oral traditions to floods and tsunamis that happened hundreds or even thousands of years ago. ; Peer reviewed

Having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can - given certain situational conditions - make individuals more vulnerable to becoming caught up in criminal activity and vulnerable to unfavourable interactions once in the criminal justice system. Guided by empirical research, psychological theory and illustrative case studies involving adults with ASD who have been implicated in crimes, Robyn L. Young and Neil Brewer explain why. They examine the pivotal cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics unique to ASD (such as weak Theory of Mind, restricted interests and acute sensory sensitivities) that - individually or in interaction - may contribute to individuals becoming involved in illegal activities. They then discuss how these same characteristics can result in ongoing ineffective interaction with the criminal justice system. Arguing that the forensic assessment of individuals with ASD requires substantial redevelopment to clarify the key deficits contributing to criminal behaviour, the authors highlight the need for, and desirable nature of, intervention programs to minimize the criminal vulnerability of adults with ASD and to prepare them for interactions with the criminal justice system. A final section raises some major unanswered questions and issues for future research. This book will be of immeasurable interest to criminal justice professionals including probation officers, social workers, clinical and forensic psychologists, police officers, lawyers and judges, as well as students of these professions

The present article makes, from a general perspective, a review of the publications on the advances of science and technology concerning the function that communication fulfills within the so-called the new social contract of science, thus intending to give an answer to the causes that have generated the rift between non-expert publics and scientific activities, and how the communication of science has contributed to it –purposefully or not–, by not taking into account how incomprehensible is scientific language for most social groups. Moreover, the article analyses the importance of the participation of people as an instrument that contributes to the democratization of the access to science and technology, and, at the same time, adds to the constitution of social subjects as active subjects, so that they can reach the muchdesired social inclusion, in opposition to the so-far marked social exclusion. ; El presente artículo hace, desde una perspectiva general, una revisión de las publicaciones sobre los avances de la ciencia y la tecnología relacionadas con la función que cumple la comunicación en el denominado nuevo contrato social de la ciencia, para así tratar de dar respuesta a las causas que han generado el apartamiento de los públicos no expertos de las actividades científicas, y a cómo la comunicación de la ciencia ha contribuido a ello –con interés o sin él–, al no tener en cuenta lo incomprensible del lenguaje científico para los grupos sociales en general. El artículo, además, presenta un análisis de la importancia de la participación pública como un instrumento que contribuye a la democratización del acceso a la ciencia y la tecnología, a la vez que coadyuva para que los sujetos sociales se constituyan en sujetos activos y, por esta vía, lleguen a conseguir la tan anhelada inclusión social, en contravía de la, hasta ahora, marcada exclusión social.
