Sustaining the carrier war: the development of naval aviation in the Pacific
In: Studies in naval history and sea power
"The ability of the United States Navy to fight and win a protracted war in the Pacific was not solely the result of technology, tactics, or leadership. Naval aviation maintenance played a major role in the U.S. victory over Japan in the second World War. The naval war against Japan did not achieve sustained success until enough aircraft technicians were available to support the high tempo of aviation operations that fast carrier task force doctrine demanded. When the United States realized war was imminent and ordered a drastic increase in the size of its aviation fleet, the Navy was forced to reconsider its earlier practices and develop new policies in maintenance, supply, and technical training. Not only did a shortage of technicians plague the Navy, but the scarcity of aviation supply and repair facilities in the Pacific soon caused panic in Washington. While the surface navy's modernization of at-sea replenishment was beneficial, it did not solve the problems of sustaining war-time aircraft readiness levels sufficient to a winning a naval air war. Fisher outlines the drastic institutional changes that accompanied an increase in aviation maintenance personnel from fewer than 10,000 to nearly 250,000 bluejackets, the complete restructuring of the naval aviation technical educational system, and the development of a highly skilled labor force. The first comprehensive study on the importance of aircraft maintenance and the aircraft technician in the age of the aircraft carrier, Sustaining the Carrier War, provides the missing link to our understanding of Great Power conflict at sea."--
How the world listens: the human relationship with sound across the world
In: Sound design
"How the World Listens explores our everyday and professional interactions with sound. The book aims to uncover the human relationship with sound across the world and to reveal practical ways in which a better understanding of listening can help us in our daily lives. Nuestra piel: una primera conversación sobre la raza
In: Primera conversación
"Developed by experts in the fields of early childhood and activism against injustice, this topic-driven picture book offers clear, concrete language and beautiful imagery that young children can grasp and adults can leverage for further discussion. While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it's hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race and gender from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice. This book in the series begins the conversation on race, with a supportive approach that considers both the child and the adult. Stunning art accompanies the simple and interactive text, and the backmatter offers additional resources and ideas for extending this discussion"--
The Laguna Madre of Texas and Tamaulipas
In: Gulf Coast books number thirty-six
"The Laguna Madre is the only hypersaline coastal lagoon on the North American continent and only one of five worldwide. The lagoon is renowned for its vast seagrass meadows, huge wintering redhead population, and bountiful fishing grounds. In 2000, the Nature Conservancy, whose mission is the conservation of biodiversity through protection of habitat, recognized the need to amass all known information about the Laguna Madre and implement a science-based conservation agenda. From those efforts came the first edition of this book. Now completely revised and updated, this second edition of The Laguna Madre of Texas and Tamaulipas is the culmination of two decades of additional research and continued conservation efforts in the region. Nearly 100 years of literature on the Laguna Madre and surrounding environments has been synthesized here. With 150 figures and illustrations, the book takes a broad and comprehensive look at both the Texan and Tamaulipan Laguna Madre. The value of this book for scientists, conservationists, resource managers, and policy makers involved in the future of the Texas and Mexico coasts is clear. Coastal residents, birders, anglers, and nature lovers who want to learn about and take care of the Laguna Madre will find this to be an indispensable guide."--
More than I imagined
"An award-winning journalist tells the story of his quest to reconcile with his white mother and the family he'd never met--and how faith brought them all together. John Blake grew up in a notorious Black neighborhood in inner-city Baltimore that was the setting for the HBO series The Wire. It was there that he became a self-described "closeted biracial person," hostile toward white people while hiding the truth of his mother's race. The son of a Black man and a white woman who met at a time when interracial marriage was still illegal, Blake knew this much about his mother: She vanished from his life not long after his birth, and her family rejected him because of his race. But at the age of seventeen, Blake had a surprise encounter that uncovered a disturbing family secret. This launched him on a quest to reconcile with his white family that centered on two questions: Where is my mother, and where do I belong? More Than I Imagined is Blake's propulsive true story about how he answered those questions--with the help of an interracial church, a loving caregiver's sacrifice, and an inexplicable childhood encounter that taught him the importance of forgiveness. Blake covered some of the biggest stories about race in America for twenty-five years before realizing that "facts don't change people, relationships do." He only discovered that after experiencing what he calls "radical integration." It was the only way forward for him and his family-and it's the only way forward for America as a multiracial democracy. More Than I Imagined is a hopeful story for our difficult times"--
Textbook of hospital psychiatry
"When it was originally published in 2009, the Textbook of Hospital Psychiatry was the first comprehensive guide to hit the market in more than a decade. This updated edition includes new material in each of the 30 chapters, with a focus on treatment, staffing, and quality of care changes, and includes new, forward-looking chapters on consumer and family perspectives, collaborative care, measurement-based care, safety, and more. Providers and policymakers agree that integrating behavioral treatments into regular courses of patient care helps address post-discharge needs, including safe housing, reliable transportation, and nutrition. Behavioral wellness is currently benefitting from increased public attention, but disparities in access continue. There is a significant need for dedicated psychiatric hospitals and dedicated units in general hospitals to meet America's mental health needs. Progress is happening, but many familiar challenges remain. Inadequate healthcare coverage and reimbursement for services has left both patients and medical providers desperate for reform. Staffing shortages are worsening as practitioners in the baby boomer generation retire and those roles go unfilled by new graduates. Despite these challenges, psychiatric hospitals continue to evolve and discover new solutions to provide transformative care for patients. This updated textbook contains valuable knowledge and novel insights for clinicians regarding treatment, staffing, and care, and features new chapters on family involvement and safety, federal and local financing, and information on collaborative care and LEAN. Forward-looking chapters focus on the integration of treatment across settings and providers and examine new strategies such as telemedicine to extend the reach of clinicians. Together, and with expert guidance, readers of this must-have resource will find a roadmap for clinical, administrative, and financial steps to help providers take advantage of these unprecedented times to develop services and advance hospital psychiatry in the United States"--
