Le thème du travail est historiquement persistant : entre le travailleur du xxe siècle et celui du Proche-Orient ancien, rien n'a changé. Le travail demeure un constituant essentiel de la vie humaine. En se basant sur la Genèse, André Lacocque met en évidence la centralité du travail en tant qu'il appartient intrinsèquement à la création même de l'être humain : Dieu a créé Adam homo faber. Pour étudier le thème du travail, il entretient un dialogue stimulant entre Bible et sciences humaines, en faisant appel non seulement aux exégètes mais aussi aux sociologues, philosophes, éthiciens et psychologues modernes.
