The conclusion by Mann (1970) that unidimensionality of political liberalism exists among groups who are very interested and/or active in the sociopolitical processes was investigated. Two national samples of clergy for the years 1972 and 1978 from six Protestant denominations revealed a high degree of interrelationship among items pertaining to topical issues. In factor analysis, only one significant factor emerged. Unidimensionality of political liberalism-conservatism appears as a reasonable assessment of the positions of these clergy concerning sociopolitical issues.
The course "Science Fiction: Humanity, Technology, the Present, the Future" uses fandom as a motivator for pedagogical development, promoting participation and engagement by encouraging students to embrace their fan passions. In classroom discussions, website commentary, Geek of the Week presentations, and a final prototype project where science fiction texts are reimagined as nonlinear user-driven experiences, students are given a role in shaping the content and trajectory of the course. Two perspectives are provided, one from a professor and one from a former student, on the course, its syllabus and assignments, and the ways in which the students' participation in fandom helps influence the hierarchies, balance, and flow of the course. By exploring new approaches to course development and more democratic classroom experiences through concepts such as affinity spaces, participatory culture, and design thinking, the course proposes a fan pedagogy that best contextualizes science fiction as a genre, field, and space for cultural commentary.

"In economics, the dominant neoliberal approach presents politics and political economy as nuisances which disturb the smooth operation of self-regulating markets. But political economy is not merely an academic issue - it is a class issue - and this book forcefully argues that political economy should return to a central position in the study of the social sciences. This book offers nothing less than a reconciliation of Marxian, Keynesian, and neoclassical economics. This model of political economy is used to analyse global capitalism, with an emphasis on the impact of globalization on the Global South. The book opens with a discussion of the key economic concepts which help to sustain capitalism: price, income, profit, value, growth and crisis. It is shown that under capitalism these concepts are all interconnected because the very emergence of capitalism resulted from the mass empowerment of the so-called "lower orders" through tightly controlled employment and income distribution. And in the Global South today it is clear that enormous riches go hand in hand with widespread misery and poverty because the market does not transform wealth into the kind of investment which might benefit the have-nots. The book argues that the new wealth triggered by productivity increases has enabled the rich to liberate themselves from the capitalist constraints of competition in order to waste their new wealth in the form of rents. The main threat today is, in fact, the globalization of rent. This book demonstrates the analytical power of political economy for all social scientists and will be invaluable reading for economists, political scientists and sociologists in particular. Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο ; Integrating computer-based technologies into all Key Learning Areas of every school's curriculum has been a priority school policy of the Victorian government since the mid -1990s. Over the last 10 years, huge sums of money have been provided to set schools up with computers and associated technologies, and a range of initiatives have been establised to assist with the implementation of this policy. In the area of science, a range of LT resources is available for use in the teaching and learning processes in the classroom. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, this paper presents findings that are aimed at identifying where science teachers are currently at with the use of computer-based technologies in their teaching. The study investigated science teachers' attitudes towards the use of computer-based technologies in their teaching; the types and availability of computer-based resources for use in the teaching of science in their schools; those resources that they have found to be effective pedagogical tools in helping students learn science; and the kinds of professional development that they would like to undertake with regards to using computer-based technologies in their classes. The study on the attitudes of science teachers toward the use of computer-based technologies is discussed in depth in Science and Computer-based Technologies: Attitudes of Secondary Science Teachers (Ng & Gunstone, 2003). This paper focuses on the use, and manner of use of these technologies in the science classroom.

From 1970 to 2012, about 9,000 high-impact weather events were reported globally, causing the loss of 1.94 million lives and damage of $2.4 trillion (U.S. dollars). The scientific community is called to action to improve the predictive ability of such events and communicate forecasts and associated risks both to affected populations and to those making decisions. At the heart of this challenge lies the ability to have easy access to hydrometeorological data and models and to facilitate the necessary collaboration between meteorologists, hydrologists, and computer science experts to achieve accelerated scientific advances. Two European Union (EU)-funded projects, Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorology (DRIHM) and DRIHM to United States of America (DRIHM2US), sought to help address this challenge by developing a prototype e-science environment providing advanced end-to-end services (models, datasets, and postprocessing tools), with the aim of paving the way to a step change in how scientists can approach studying these events, with a special focus on flood events in complex topographic areas. This paper describes the motivation and philosophy behind this prototype e-science environment together with certain key components, focusing on hydrometeorological aspects that are then illustrated through actionable research for a critical flash flood event that occurred in October 2014 in Liguria, Italy.
T. M. Goodland (see SA6536) proposed a systematic approach to analyzing a soc phenomenon expressed in multiple forms in a society, eg, kinship relations, pol'al parties. The approach is based on a selection of central issues, the possible alternative stands on these issues, & the resultant combinations. & was applied to Israel's pol'al parties. L. Guttman in 'Whither Israel's Political Parties ?', Jewish Frontier, 1961, Dec, overcomes objections of circularity & subjectivity by proposing the incorporation of scale analysis. The approach is here applied to the ideologies of Israeli voters, using the Guttman issues. Data were obtained from interviews, using a multiple-choice questionnaire, with a 1961 stratified sample of all Israeli Jewish adults (N=1,170) not including kibbutz members. The scale types resulting from the combination of the responses to 4 items are considered as popular ideologies. The relationships of these ideologies to party support & to soc characteristics are considered. 2 particular phenomena are noted: (1) the failure to find the traditional left-to-right-L-to-U relationship; & (2) the concentration of the nonideologicals in the Lc. The concept of a critical level is offered to explain these findings, & linked to other att'al & life chances data. AA.
This book systematically and comprehensively studies on alternative media in Taiwan, using a historical approach and primary data and first hand collected materials to examine how political openness and social movement in the 1980s through the 1990s in Taiwan enabled the rapid growth and wide development of Taiwan's alternative media, what impact the alternative media in Taiwan had on its socio-political transformation, and what implications Taiwan's case of alternative media has for other societies, especially for other Asian societies. This book would be a good reading for intellectuals, media professionals, government analysts, and the general public as well, who are interested in this topic
Focused on unique features of economic development, this edited volume examines the nature and structure of corporate governance of several key state-owned enterprises in China and public sector units in India in five strategic sectors: oil and natural gas, steel, coal, electricity generation, and banking industries.
