La razón política de ello, auténtica razón de estado, residió en la necesidad de recortar su autonomía y aminorar su capacidad de resistencia a los cambios necesarios para el "progreso y la utilidad públicas". En este trabajo se muestra que la expresión de la ciudad ilustrada mediante el lenguaje y las claves estéticas del neoclasicismo respondió a un intento de refundación virtuosa que pretendió dotarla del orden y el equilibrio que según los reformistas había perdido por causa de su corrupción y desorden. One of its main objectives was to undermine its traditional authonomy. As such, it was developed a plan to reduce its capacity to resist the changes linked to the "spirit of the ages", the progress and public wellfare being the only fair reason détre for a city. In fact, the expression of the enlightened city through Neoclasic esthetics tried to develop a kind of virtuous foundation, in order to recover a sense of balance and order suposedly lost in the recent past. Peculiarities of the formation of life strategies of youth in the modern Ukrainian society are regarded in the article. Young people are the force that has a huge potential resource. this is said by various sociological studies. youth is rapidly turned to the active force of socio­economic, political and cultural transformations in certain social situations. This situation can arise only on condition that the young generation especially pupils, adequately prepared for life. Therefore, the study of the essence of youth as a specific socio­demographic community, their nature and characteristics of socialization has great theoretical and practical significance. This allows, on the one hand, to create the conditions for self­development and self­realization of students, on the other ­ to include them in all social processes to the progressive development of society.Life strategies and social practices of the modern youth, as well as other public actors, now is under the influence of processes of social transformation of modern Ukrainian society. Value orientation as an essential element of life strategies occupy an important place among the factors that contribute to the process of social self­determination of students.Youth is often based on a values such as personal growth, love and commitment, interpersonal relations and communication, autonomy, safety and security during constructing a life plan. This was showed by the results of study students life strategies and valuable component. Young people articulate key goals in life their lives and organize their behavior according to these values. Згідно з соціологічними уявленнями, саме молодь є тією силою, яка має величезний потенційний ресурс і за певних соціальних обставин швидко перетворюється на активну силу соціально­економічних, політичних і культурних трансформацій. Така ситуація може скластися лише за умови, якщо молоде покоління, особливо учнівська молодь, відповідним чином підготовлене до життя. Тому дослідження сутності молоді як специфічної соціально­демографічної спільноти, характеру і особливостей її соціалізації має велике теоретичне і практичне значення. Це дає змогу, з одного боку, створити умови для саморозвитку і самореалізації учнівської молоді, а з іншого – включити її в усі суспільні процеси з метою прогресивного поступу суспільства.Життєві стратегії та соціальна практика сучасної учнівської молоді, як і інших масових акторів, зараз перебуває під впливом процесів соціальної трансформації сучасного українського суспільства. Серед чинників, що зумовлюють процес соціального самовизначення учнівської молоді, важливе місце займають ціннісні орієнтації як найважливіший елемент життєвих стратегій.Результати дослідження життєвих стратегій учнівської молоді та ціннісного компонента, зокрема, показали, що в побудові плану свого життя молодь найчастіше спирається на такі цінності, як особистісне зростання, прихильність та любов, міжособистісні відносини та спілкування, автономність, безпека та захищеність. Відповідно до цих цінностей молоді люди формулюють ключові життєві цілі власного життя та організовують свою поведінку. Робиться висновок, що сучасна учнівська молодь при побудові власної життєвої стратегії орієнтується на власні, а не суспільні проблеми, а соціальна динаміка базових напрямів парадигми життєвих стратегій здійснюється суперечливо й непослідовно. ; У даній статті розглянуті особливості формування життєвих стратегій учнівської молоді в сучасному українському суспільстві. The author of the article presents changes that took place in the textbook depictions of women – counted among the antiheroines of Polish History – from 1918 to 1939. The starting point are 19th-century compilations, in which the authors' attention was focused on prominent queens of the Early Modern era: Bona Sforza, Maria Ludwika Gonzaga, and Maria Kazimiera de La Grange d'Arquien. The attitudes of the authors of historical and educational compilations created after Poland regained its independence towards these women was the result of various factors, but also a proof of acceptance of women's new roles in the newly united – among others, through historical education – society. This applied particularly to those women's roles that evoked social resistance, as they were linked to involvement in politics, which was viewed as a space for men's activity.The article emphasises comparative concepts to clearly delineate differences between what was typical of educational framing pre- and post-1918. The author analyzed 30 history textbooks written in the first and second decade of Poland Reborn, addressed to children and youth in primary, gymnasium and secondary schools. The article serves as a search for the answers to the following questions: 1. In what way were ambitious women rulers perceived in different political conditions, i.e. in a situation of formal equality of the political rights of women and men? 2. How different were textbooks in the Piłsudski-reformed schools from those used earlier? 3. To what extent did the reorientation of the educational ideal of the 1930s influence the image of the politically involved Polish queens of the Early Modern era? ; Autorka artykułu przedstawia zmiany jakie dokonały się w podręcznikowym obrazie kobiet – zaliczanych do grupy antybohaterek dziejów Polski – w latach 1918–1939. Punktem wyjścia są opracowania dziewiętnastowieczne, w których uwaga piszących skupiona była na wybitnych królowych doby nowożytnej: Bonie, Marii Ludwice i Marii Kazimierze. Stosunek do nich autorów opracowań historyczno-dydaktycznych powstałych po odzyskaniu niepodległości był pochodną różnych czynników, ale i dowodem akceptacji dla nowych ról kobiet w scalanym na nowo społeczeństwie, m.in. drogą edukacji historycznej. Dotyczyło to szczególnie tych kobiecych ról, które wywoływały społeczny opór, ponieważ związane były z zaangażowaniem w politykę, uznawaną za przestrzeń męskiej aktywności.W artykule położono nacisk na ujęcia porównawcze, tak, aby wyraźnie zarysowały się różnice między tym, co było typowe dla ujęć dydaktycznych sprzed i po 1918 r. Przeanalizowano 30 podręczników historii powstałych w pierwszej i drugiej dekadzie Polski Odrodzonej, adresowanych do dzieci i młodzieży szkół powszechnych, gimnazjów i liceów ogólnokształcących. Poszukiwano przy tym odpowiedzi na pytania: 1. W jaki sposób postrzegano ambitne władczynie w odmiennych warunkach politycznych, tj. w sytuacji formalnej równości praw politycznych kobiet i mężczyzn? 2. Na ile podręczniki dla zreformowanej przez piłsudczyków szkoły odróżniały się od tych wykorzystywanych wcześniej? 3. W jakiej mierze reorientacja ideału wychowawczego w lat trzydziestych XX w. wpłynęła na obraz rozpolitykowanych polskich królowych doby nowożytnej?

India's coronavirus lockdown forced low-wage migrant workers to return from the city to the home towns and villages from which they came. Pre-pandemic living and working conditions were already stressful and difficult for these migrants. The lockdown became an additional burden, since it shut down sources of income with no assurance about when, or if, work and earning to support families could be resumed. This article draws on the lens of the Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) to understand how workers engaged with and navigated these difficult times. A total of 54 migrant workers locked-down at home across the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal were interviewed for this qualitative study. Financial worries were found to be endemic, with rising debt a major source of stress, and educational qualifications becoming an obstacle to earning. Returning migrants were suspected of bringing the virus from the city, and so stigmatized in their home towns and villages. However, the pandemic lockdown also showed some unexpected healthful consequences. It provided these marginalized, and always busy workers the time and space to stop working for a while, to stay home, eat home food, and take walks in the comparatively green and clean spaces of their home environments. In this, the pandemic lockdown may be seen to have enabled a measure of agency and health in the lives of these workers, an oasis albeit temporary, and ultimately subject to the demands of the globalized cities of India.

Background: Research from across the world has shown that rates of seasonal mood disturbances may vary according to such factors as geographical location, age and gender. Little is known of the nature of these problems within representative community samples in UK and Ireland. Aims: In two studies we examined the extent to which winter disrupts mood and behaviour among random samples of British and Irish adults. Methods: In the first study, 533 adults randomly chosen from electoral data from four towns spread across 50-58°N completed the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). In the second study, 498 adults from two towns in Northern Ireland (54°N) completed the SPAQ. Results: Although the combined response rate across the two studies was low (20.5%), the prevalence rates were similar to several other western European sites. The rate of SAD and S-SAD averaged across the six centres as determined from strict SPAQ criteria, was 6.7% and 10.5% respectively. There was some variability in rates from town to town, with one Northern Irish town presenting rates more associated with areas at much lower latitudes, although most differences between towns were not significant. As in most other studies, females of reproductive age tended to supply the higher number of incidences. Conclusion: This report from community samples across six sites confirms earlier suggestions that rates of seasonal disturbance in mood and behaviour deserve serious consideration by mental health practitioners throughout the region.

This book, based on a Ph.D. thesis submitted at Princeton University about ten years ago, is a welcome contribution to historians' relatively narrow preoccupation with Islam as practiced rather than the Islam of textual production. Its author, currently associate professor of religious studies at Drew University, sets out to describe and analyze a vital practice of Islamic piety that is the cult of Muslim dead "saints" (ziy―ara) in Egypt between 1200 and 1500 C.E. The choice of the topic is certainly pertinent, for, as Taylor notes, the saint phenomenon has not received the study it deserves. Goldziher's pioneering article, although written more than 100 years ago, remains to a large extent unsurpassed, and most of the research since has been done on the geographic peripheries of the Islamic world and largely in a modern context.

Written by four leading economic historians of Indonesia from three continents, this book is an excellent account of the emergence of the Indonesian economy in the twentieth century from what was a cluster of disparate economic regions at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Using an innovative and, in the context of Indonesia, highly appropriate theme, the authors identify three fundamental forces that shaped the emergence of the Indonesian national economy: successive waves of globalization (and dislocation), state formation, and economic integration. The book is admirably successful in fulfilling its claim, not an easy task given the volume of literature that had to be mastered and put into perspective in order to comprehensively describe this process.
