A theoretical analysis of F. A. Hayek's theory of social organization. Hayek contends that socialism, welfare state capitalism, & all state planning regimes are based on erroneous rationalist assumptions that exaggerate human planning capacities. But Hayek's own conception of the market as a "spontaneous order" & his evolutionary theory of organizational development are themselves based on a naive & ahistorical rationalism. In particular Hayek ignores the role of power in shaping organizational environments & in organizational operations in the private sector. Also, Hayek fails to provide an adequate theory of successful planning by private bureaucracies. Weberian organizational theory is used to demonstrate the internal weaknesses of Hayek's thought & to expose metatheoretic weaknesses of free market theory. AA
