Ph.D. dissertation by James Lane Gillings submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology, Utah State University, 1969. Typewritten, 126 single-sided pages with interview schedule in appendix. Includes tables and Gillings's vita. ; The rural-urban differential was investigated in its relationship to certain expressed attitudes relating to natural resource development, use, and control. The rural-urban differential was also investigated as a variable affecting expressed attitudes toward the educational, economic, and political institutions. The two sets of expressed attitudes were then correlated to each other. A difference was found between the rural and the urban groups regarding their expressed attitudes concerning natural resource development, use, and control. Differences between the rural and the urban groups were also found in regard to attitudes toward the political institution. No significant differences were found regarding the attitudes towards economic and educational institutions. No significant relationship was found between the attitudes toward natural resources and attitudes toward the three social institutions. The uniformity of behavior related to natural resources indicated that there is possib
; The problem of social inequality is one of the main theoretical issues in sociology. In the age of globalization there is a new subject, "global social inequality". Its novelty lies in the fact that there is not only an increase in the scale of inequality, but also an emergence of new types of inequality, as well as interpenetration of the "old" and "new" types that requires modification of research methodology. The economic, universalist (resource) approach to global inequality denies its fundamental novelty and recognizes only the change in the scale. It is opposed by a pluralist approach of "global sociology", and G. Therborn''s theory of "social inequalities" is a constituent part of it. Therborn identifies three dimensions of inequality: vital, existential and resource. Each dimension corresponds to their "field": vital dimension corresponds to family, existential to social interaction, resource to property and employment. These fields are molded from vertical and horizontal inequalities which are denoted by metaphors of "ladders" and "circles". Each of the inequalities is formed by the influence of four differentiation factors: 1) nature; 2) the system of structuring opportunities and benefits; 3) productivity and efficiency of action; and 4) individual and collective redistributive action. Vital inequality could be flattened or increased under the influence of existential inequality; existential under the influence of the resource inequality. The class struggle is the main form of redistribution of resources. System of production, reproduction and change of inequality can be represented in the form of four dual positions where each mechanism of inequalization (distancing, exclusion, hierarchization, exploitation) is opposed by its own mechanism of equalization (compensation, inclusion, organizational / institutional alignment and redistribution). Since global inequality is not always globally emerged, it is not only a result of the global distancing, but also a result of various combinations of global and national inequalities. Growth of importance of inequalities within countries under the influence of global polarization determine the class character of the new global order. There are two main trends: development of the middle class and consolidation of the working class. Development of the middle class includes globalization of the consumer middle class and politicization, protest of the national middle classes. Consolidation of the working class includes de-industrialization of developed countries and concentration of the working class in Asia, as well as the mobilization of the lower strata in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Supererogation is the category of moral actions which go beyond the call of duty. This collection of articles is the first of its kind to cover the broad spectrum of issues related to supererogation. It provides an up-to-date status of the discussion on the main issues, alternative analyses, and controversies regarding central cases of supererogation. The work explores a broad range of philosophical problems and challenges our presuppositions about the basis of ethical theories. Beyond the challenges of supererogation to deontological and utilitarian views, this book presents the latest developments in the way virtue ethics approaches supererogation. It also discusses the issue of whether there is a negative analogue to the supererogatory: the suberogatory. The Handbook consists also of the first systematic discussion of supererogation from the point of view of five religions as well as a feminist analysis of the concept. The book is an essential read for philosophy scholars interested in moral philosophy

The aim of this article is attempt to reconstruct the model of Western Culture, which appears on field of contemporary philosophy of culture. This view basis on the division of the culture into 3 periods: pre-modernity, modernity and post-modernity. Modernity is initiated with intensive increase of rationalization, disenchantment of the world, as well as with faith in reason and improvement. Post-modernity stems from disappointment of reason and fear of consequences of technical progress. Reason and Progress are treated as substitute for traditional myth and religions. Pre-modernity are background for those analyses. Nowadays this is the model of interpretation for social and intellectual events observed in Western culture. That model deals with general and permanent crisis of culture. The essence of this crisis is fragmentation of the human world (break-up of fundamentals of philosophical and scientific inquiry as well as everyday morality) and 'myself'.
While it has become fashionable in the arena of international health to think about health systems, the theoretical underpinning of Niklas Luhmann's vast and productive theory has been given too little consideration in the field. It is rich in concepts that can facilitate a fuller understanding of what health systems are. João Costa applies these concepts and shows the analytical possibilities they open up. He argues concisely how Luhmann's Social Systems Theory offers an integrated theoretical body as well as a consistent articulation of concepts that can lay the groundwork for a vastly improved health systems thinking.
Scale matters. When conducting research and writing, scholars upscale and downscale. So do the subjects of their work - we scale, they scale. Although scaling is an integrant part of research, we rarely reflect on scaling as a practice and what happens when we engage with it in scholarly work. The contributors aim to change this: they explore the pitfalls and potentials of scaling in an interdisciplinary dialogue. The volume brings together scholars from diverse fields, working on different geographical areas and time periods, to engage with scale-conscious questions regarding human sociality, culture, and evolution. With contributions by Nurit Bird-David, Robert L. Kelly, Charlotte Damm, Andreas Maier, Brian Codding, Elspeth Ready, Bram Tucker, Graeme Warren and others.

In Seeing Justice, Mary Angela Bock studies the way the American criminal justice system is visually represented in news. Going behind the scenes, she examines the way visual journalists negotiate with police and court officials to cover the criminal justice system, and how officials endeavour to create favourable narratives by controlling what the public sees.
