Drawing on evolutionary history and the emergent science of human nature, this book argues that humans have an innate sense of fairness. While these impulses can easily be subverted by greed and demagoguery, they can also be harnessed for good. The author brings together the latest findings from the behavioral and biological sciences to propose a new Biosocial Contract including sweeping economic and political reforms based on three principles of fairness--equality, equity, and reciprocity. His conclusion is that the proper response to bank bailouts and financial chicanery isn't to get mad--it's to get fair.

Having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can - given certain situational conditions - make individuals more vulnerable to becoming caught up in criminal activity and vulnerable to unfavourable interactions once in the criminal justice system. Guided by empirical research, psychological theory and illustrative case studies involving adults with ASD who have been implicated in crimes, Robyn L. Young and Neil Brewer explain why. They examine the pivotal cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics unique to ASD (such as weak Theory of Mind, restricted interests and acute sensory sensitivities) that - individually or in interaction - may contribute to individuals becoming involved in illegal activities. They then discuss how these same characteristics can result in ongoing ineffective interaction with the criminal justice system. Arguing that the forensic assessment of individuals with ASD requires substantial redevelopment to clarify the key deficits contributing to criminal behaviour, the authors highlight the need for, and desirable nature of, intervention programs to minimize the criminal vulnerability of adults with ASD and to prepare them for interactions with the criminal justice system. A final section raises some major unanswered questions and issues for future research. This book will be of immeasurable interest to criminal justice professionals including probation officers, social workers, clinical and forensic psychologists, police officers, lawyers and judges, as well as students of these professions

From the perspective of an economist in a private basic and applied research firm, this article examines the evolving structure of social science research firms that contribute to the social science theoretical and empirical literature on measuring the nation's well-being. A distinction is made between the terms consultant and research firm in the context of historical and contemporary research practices. Visible examples and possible implications of new structural arrangements within the research industry are provided, including ethical standards. It is argued that social science research—no longer conducted in the monastic tradition—is dynamic and competitive, yielding significant contributions to our knowledge about basic and applied research techniques.

THE POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY OF NATION-BUILDING AND NATIONALISM IS EXAMINED AND IT IS ARGUED THAT DIFFERENT IMAGES OF NATIONALISM PRODUCE RADICALLY DIFFERENT POLITICAL GEOGRAPHIES. THE HEGELIAN TENDENCY TO VIEW NATIONALISM AS AN AUTONOMOUS SOCIAL FORCE, AND STRUCTURALIST THEORIES THAT ACCEPT THE NATION-STATE AS ENTIRELY NATURAL AND PROGRESSIVE, HAVE ENDED IN A 'STATE-CENTRED' POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY OF NATIONALISM. IN SO DOING THEY CONTRIBUTED TO THE VERY PROCESS OF NATION-BUILDING. THE PAPER PROVIDES AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRE-NATIONALIST ROOTS OF MODERN NATION-STATES AND EXAMINES POPULAR RESISTANCE TO THE 'NATIONALIZING' INSTITUTIONS OF THE CAPITALIST STATE IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY. IT CRITICIZES THE DUALIST THINKING AT THE HEART OF MOST STUDIES OF NATION-BUILDING AND NATIONALISM WHICH TREAT FACTORS THAT ARE DIALECTICALLY INTERRELATED IN REALITY AS THOUGH THEY OPERATED INDEPENDENTLY OF EACH OTHER FOR THE PURPOSES OF MODELBUILDING. THROUGHOUT IT IS ARGUED THAT NATION-BUILDING AND NATIONALISM ARE BEST APPROACHED FROM A DIALECTICAL PERSPECTIVE WHICH APPRECIATES THE INTERRELATEDNESS OF THE CULTURAL AND THE POLITICAL WITH THE ECONOMIC FORCES INHERENT IN NATION-BUILDING. THE PAPER CONCLUDES WITH A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE ANARCHIST CRITIQUE OF THE STATE-CENTRED POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY OF CAPITALISM BY LOOKING AT KROPOTKIN'S THEORETICAL CONDEMNATION OF NATION-BUILDING AND THE CAPITALIST STATE AS BOTH NATURAL AND PROGRESSIVE.

There are two purposes to this article. The first is to update the science of social work framework. The second is to use recent discussions on the nature of realist science and on social work science to propose a definition of social work as an integrative scientific discipline that complements its definition as a profession.
