"The historiography of feminist rhetorical research raises ethical questions about whose stories are told and how. Women and other marginalized people have been excluded historically from many formal institutions, and researchers in this field often turn to alternative archives to explore how women have used writing and rhetoric to participate in civic life, share their lived experiences, and effect change. Such methods may lead to innovation in documenting practices that took place in local, grassroots settings. The chapters in this volume present a frank conversation about the ways in which feminist scholars engage in the work of recovering hidden rhetorics, and grapple with the ethical challenges raised by this recovery work"--

"An invaluable guide to urban research design for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Writing in a friendly, conversational, tone Kevin Ward and an impressive collection of influential urbanists provide the novice researcher a wealth of practical advice on theory, methods, writing style, and everything else one needs to know to design and manage a successful urban research project. I wish this book had been available when I started my research career!" - Byron Miller, Director, Urban Studies Program, University of Calgary "Extends a warm welcome to students who have come face-to-face with the daunting task of producing a dissertation. This thoroughgoing collection deals with the nitty-gritty of researching the city: how to get started, what goes in a literature review, what methods would best suit the project (chapters on an array of different methods are offered) and strategies for writing up. All-in-all, this book is not only a must-have for the student, but also for those of us looking to give sound, supportive and practicably useful guidance to our students" - Kim England, University of Washington This practical guide for students focuses on the city and on the different ways to research it. Kevin Ward and eight colleagues - all leading urban researchers - explain how research is done, from the original idea to design and implementation, through to writing up and representation. Substantive chapters explain each method in detail, from using archival methods, interviews, ethnography, questionnaires, discourse analysis and diaries, to using GIS and visual methods. With real world examples throughout and guided further reading for each chapter, this is an inspiring guide for students doing their own research in urban geography, urban planning, urban studies and urban sociology.
"Author Bagele Chilisa updates her groundbreaking textbook to give a new generation of scholars a crucial foundation in indigenous methods, methodologies, and epistemologies. Addressing the increasing emphasis in the classroom and in the field to sensitize researchers and students to diverse perspectives - especially those of women, minority groups, former colonized societies, indigenous people, historically oppressed communities, and people with disabilities, the second edition of Indigenous Research Methodologies situates research in a larger, historical, cultural, and global context to make visible the specific methodologies that are commensurate with the transformative paradigm of social science research"--

A rich tradition of quantitative research, cutting across the various social science disciplines, has examined historical legacies in contemporary economic and political development. In recent years, a new stream of research, including work done by this author, has sought to explore similar legacies in modern ethnic conflict. Although much research has accumulated under these different streams, there is little in the way of methodological work that has spoken to the pitfalls of doing this kind of research and how to navigate those pitfalls. In this case study, I discuss two core issues that I have faced in designing my own research on historical legacies in modern ethnic conflict. The first issue is the scarcity of data on variables of interest. The second issue, which is also related to data availability concerns, is the problem of having to work with small samples. I then discuss strategies that I used to get around these pitfalls. These involved making important conceptual adjustments at the data collection stage and drawing upon research in disciplines that routinely deal with small samples to identify relevant estimation strategies. The analysis is based on an original colonial legacies dataset covering 177 ethnic groups in 33 former British colonies that was collated by the author from various archival as well as secondary sources.

This research methods case study walks the researcher through a number of steps the author took in utilizing critical discourse analysis to investigate the role humanitarianism can play in shaping the character of war. Critical discourse analysis was useful because of the decision to tackle this topic by examining humanitarian discourse in the justification of major policy decisions that shape war. This move from a broad subject of interest to a discourse operative within it speaks to the way that, as the first section explains, critical discourse analysis may be particularly attractive to scholars who determine that discourse might be important to their research question, but who do not subscribe to the full set of assumptions underlying the dominant approach to discourse analysis, poststructuralist Discourse Theory. For unlike Discourse Theory, critical discourse analysis sees discourse as something that the researcher should attempt to put into causal relation with other aspects of the social world. Subsequent sections highlight some crucial differences critical discourse analysis can make in three stages of research: (1) developing a research design, (2) the collection, organization, and interpretation of data, and (3) writing the final analysis.
