Si le rapport entre les Lumières et les religions révélées est polémique, les formes du conflit diffèrent selon les traditions intellectuelles et les confessions. Plutôt que de répéter l'opposition abstraite entre raison et foi, mieux vaut évoquer les singularités juives, chrétiennes et musulmanes face aux prétentions de la raison humaine. Y a-t-il un sens à parler de « Lumières religieuses » ? Comment les grands monothéismes ont-ils accueilli la provocation venue des Lumières ?

International audience ; The invisible politics of religion in southern European territories: preliminary considerations With this issue of Religion, State & Society, we inaugurate a planned series of special sections focusing on the analysis of the political involvement of religious associations and organisations at the local level. Without pre-empting the more substantial conclusion that we plan for the last of the special sections, in this short introduction we aim to state brieflythe main issues that will be covered by the selected articles.

The relationship between religion, intolerance and conflict is the subject of intense discussion, particularly in the context of the ongoing threat of terrorism. This book contains papers written by scholars in anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and theology exploring the scientific and conceptual dimensions of religion and human conflict.

Scholarship on religious belonging has overwhelmingly labelled believers' religion in very broad and superficial terms, presuming that individual practices and beliefs are congruent with religious doctrines and official discourses. By splitting up religious socialisation into two crucial phases, the adoption and the adaption of religion, this article offers a more procedural understanding to investigating how young believers develop their own sense of religious belonging. Based on biographical narrative interviews with Viennese believers (aged 16–25) from 7 religious groups, we observe that the adoption of a certain religion is primarily bound to family ties. The adaption phase serves to develop personal approaches towards religion based on two major rationales: adapting one's own religiosity by engaging with religious doctrine and community itself, and negotiating religion within society. We argue that adaption is closely tied to social relations within and across religions and to (secular) society at large.

"We investigate empirically whether political institutions or culture and religion underlie gender inequality in education. The dataset contains up to 157 countries over the 1991-2006 period. The results indicate that political institutions do not significantly influence education of girls: autocratic regimes do not discriminate against girls in denying educational opportunities and democracies do not discriminate by gender when providing educational opportunities. The primary influence on gender inequality in education is through culture and religion. Discrimination against girls is especially pronounced in Muslim dominated countries." THIS ARTICLE INVESTIGATES THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGIOSITY ON ONE GROUP OF POLITICAL ACTIVISTS: PARTY AND PAC CONTRIBUTORS. THE AUTHORS FIND THAT THE RELIGIOUS TEND TO CLUSTER IN CONSERVATIVE PACS AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, AND MORE SECULAR ACTIVISTS PREFER LIBERAL PACS AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. AT THE INDIVIDUAL LEVEL, AS WELL, RELIGIOSITY IS ASSOCIATED WITH POLITICAL CONSERVATISM, ESPECIALLY ON SOCIAL ISSUES, BUT ALSO ON A WIDE VARIETY OF ECONOMIC AND FOREIGN POLICY QUESTIONS. FINALLY, RELIGION IS SHOWN TO HAVE CONSIDERABLE INDEPENDENT INFLUENCE, EVEN WHEN OTHER IMPORTANT VARIABLES ARE CONTROLLED. THE FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT RELIGION MAY BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR DIFFERENTIATING CONSERVATIVE AND LIBERAL IDEOLOGIES AMONG POLITICAL ACTIVISTS.

This book provides an account and explanation of a fundamental dilemma facing secular states: the "legitimacy gap" left by the withdrawal of religion as a source of legitimacy. Legitimacy represents a particular problem for the secular state. The "secular" in all its manifestations is very much linked to the historical rise of the modern state. It should not be seen as a category that separates culture and religion from politics, but rather as one that links these different dimensions. In the first part of the book, Depaigne explains how modern constitutional law has moved away from a "substantive" legitimacy, based in particular on natural law, towards a 'procedural' legitimacy based on popular sovereignty and human rights. Depaigne examines three case studies of constitutional responses to legitimacy challenges which articulate the three main sources of "procedural" legitimacy (people, rights, and culture) in different ways: the "neutral model" (constitutions based on the "displacement of culture"); the "multicultural model" (constitutions based on diversity and pluralism); and the "asymmetric model" (constitutions based on tradition). Even if secularization can be considered European in its origin, it is best seen today as a global phenomenon, which needs to be approached by taking into account the particular cultural dimension in which it is rooted.
