In the past several decades, the US military has increasingly relied on civilian contractors to provide a variety of core functions. Lagging behind this increased reliance on contractors is an understanding of how the presence of contractors influences civilian and military personnel. This research addresses this question using a unique study of US Department of Army civilians and military personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. We find a substantial degree of ambivalence among both groups regarding the impact of contractors on the military and comparisons with contractors, but we also find a noticeable trend of comparative discontent beneath this apparent ambivalence. Results are discussed in the context of using ambivalence as a starting point for building a theoretical approach to more systematically understanding the role and effects of contractor integration in the military. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una reflexión acerca de la vulnerabilidad de los niños y niñas víctimas del conflicto armado en Colombia. Para ello se recurriro al principio de auto-eco-organización y de Bucle inter-retroactivo. La violencia es un fenómeno complejo de múltiples interacciones, de características no-lineales y tendencia auto-eo-organizativa que afecta la noción de sujeto y altera el modo como los niños y niñas interpretan el mundo y sus interacciones.

Purpose
– This paper aims to analyze how information technology (IT) can help explain performance by the purchasing function. In addition to analyzing the direct effect and mediating role of purchasing practices in the relationship between IT and purchasing performance, as has been considered in previous research, this study investigates the possibility of a moderating effect of IT in the relationships between purchasing practices and purchasing performance.


Design/methodology/approach
– The propositions are tested with data from 156 purchasing managers, collected through a survey of members of the Spanish Association of Professionals of Purchasing and Supply Management who work in industrial companies.


Findings
– Although IT investments exert a positive effect on the purchasing function, the results show that this effect takes place through the implementation of purchasing practices that in turn improve the results of the purchasing function.


Originality/value
– Instead of focusing on a single, specific effect of IT investment in the purchasing function, this paper considers three potential effects (direct, mediated and moderating). Thus, it provides a more comprehensive overview of the topic and a more complete elucidation of the actual effects.

AbstractResearch over the past twenty years has found that fathers play an important role in their children's development. However, the literature on fatherhood is still limited, particularly in the Arab world. This paper uses data from a mixed-method pilot study of sixty-one Arabs residing in the United Arab Emirates to examine the nature and impact of father involvement in the Arab region. The findings indicate that Arab fathers score highly on the good provider role, but low on responsible paternal engagement, which includes father involvement in the child's education and related activities. We also find that the more positively involved a father has been in his child's life, the higher the child's self-esteem tends to be. In addition, the results show that experiences of father involvement vary according to the gender of the child, socioeconomic status, and nationality. These findings have important implications for understanding the nature of Arab father involvement and serve as a prelude to a larger study of father involvement across the Arab region.

The article gives good information about the important role of hadiths in education and upbringing. Hadiths are an important source for the education of the people, morality, religious beliefs, as well as the study of the life of the people, its past economic, political and cultural life. It is proved that hadiths have only good influence on people. Several hadiths are explained in the article. To sum up hadiths are a means of transmitting ancient customs, traditions, rituals and customs from generation to generation.

Scope and prospects of work in the field of human factors in rural India are discussed. Modifications in technology for its adaptation to the needs of the native society are important. A man-powered grain harvester designed to satisfy these needs is discussed. Various individuals and organizations interested in different disciplines of human factors in India are listed. These individuals and organizations could act as a nucleus for much broader work in the field.

A formal comparative description of an international system operation in the presence & in the absence of force as a perturbing factor is proposed. Areas of discussion include: (1) a model of international system structure & behavior, (2) models of goal-oriented behavior of individual actor-states, (3) the relationship between individual & collective behavior, (4) a formal description of the force-factor in international relations, its operation, & its perturbing effects, (5) a measure of political manageability of international relations, & (6) conclusions related to conditions for improving a given international conjuncture. It is proved that, under certain hypotheses, the increasing participation in the international system, the independence of partners, & especially the nonuse of force, are factors that improve the political manageability of world affairs. This article examines the 'policy networks' that existed between 1997 and 2007 in UK asylum, economic migration and immigrant integration policy. The analysis shows that employers and businesses (together with other state and non-state actors) were part of a tightly organised, ideologically cohesive economic migration 'policy community'. This policy community was crucial to the development of economic migration policy, in contrast to the development of asylum and integration policies. The central argument of this article is that the mainstream interpretation of UK immigration policy change (that change was driven by an elite-led, powerful executive) is correct in tracing the dynamics of asylum policy development between 1997 and 2007 under New Labour, but wrong for the development of immigration policy as a whole, which was more complex, and where businesses played a key role.

Taking advantage of the discovery of large hydrocarbon reserves and relatively stable political environment, the GCC countries filled the large demand for labor with foreign workers.
