The marked recent increase of the number of governmental & nongovernmental international organizations is attributed to coalescence of a number of factors, including: (1) the nature of the existing international system, (2) geographical coverage of the international system, & (3) transport & communication facilities. The history of international organizations is explored including: (A) the tenuous coalitions of medieval Europe, (B) the Concert of Europe in the nineteenth century, (C) the League of Nations, & (D) the UN.
