Abstract
New digital methods are currently enhancing the historian's toolbox fundamentally. This thematic issue is a collection of papers discussing case studies in the fields of digitization, optical character recognition, distant reading, text mining, network analysis, and historical geographical information systems. The papers discuss opportunities and limitations in the application of digital methods in historical studies and point out fields of future applications.
The article begins by recognizing the importance of claiming a popular history that enhances the role of the actors traditionally excluded, as opposed to conventional history of the elites. In this way, its main purpose is to reveal the political interests that under populist speeches, exaggerate oral testimonies to pass them as equivalent to history, to the detriment of the philosophies and theories that even with its shortcomings, have built the scientific nature of historiography.

Damascus, first published in 2005, was the first book in English to relate the history of the city, bringing out the crucial role it has played at many points in the region's past. It traced the history of this colourful, significant and complex city through its physical development, from the city's emergence in around 7000 BC through the changing cavalcade of Aramaean, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Mongol and French rulers right up to the end of Turkish control in 1918. Now updated to place the city in the context of the events of the Syrian conflict post-2011, and to include the most recent scholarship on the long history of the city, this volume is a must-read for anyone interested in Syrian history and archaeology, and an ideal partner to Burns' Aleppo (Routledge, 2016). Lavishly illustrated, Damascus: A History remains a compelling and unique exploration of this fascinating city

All photographs are historical photographs. Whether they existed for seconds or millennia before the shutter clicks, the objects in the frame all have a history. Without knowing that history, photographs can become dead objects, untethered in time and space. The author uses contemporary photographs of Tulare County and archival and contemporary photographs of F Ranch in Point Reyes to show how the history of a landscape is revealed.

The rich and famous have looked down upon history for most of the 20th century. In 1916, the pioneer car manufacturer, Henry Ford, declared "History is bunk" because it"s an unwanted vestige of tradition. On the other hand, in 2005, Thomas Friedman, thought the past was overloaded with memories, these remembrances were the assassins of dreams and any society with more memories than dreams was destined to decay. Contrary to this, we argue here that history has four distinct uses, it is an aesthetic guide and moral teacher like biographies, it has a utilitarian value as a rear view mirror, it is a political device to legitimise nations and it is one epistemological tool to understand society.KeywHistoriography; Historical ords: History; thinking
