In this article, focusing on the analysis of Ruth Ozeki Lounsbury's 1995 first- person documentary Halving the Bones: Making a Family Album?, I discuss the role of fiction and counter-memory in resisting the hegemonic practices that have marked Asian American history with distortions, omissions, and stereotypes. I show how Ozeki employs the fictional documentary medium to question hierarchies and categorizations and to reveal them as dispositifs of dominion especially concerning gender and race. The autobiographical project traces one hundred years of the "half-Japanese, half- American" filmmaker Ruth's maternal family history. Ozeki's imaginative in(ter)ventions in the personal, cultural, and historical stories of her family end up creating a proliferation of voices and possibilities. I argue that the "mess" generated by introducing elements of doubt, multiplicity, recursiveness, and invention in the narration of the Japanese and Japanese American women's lives is a productive, meaningful way to undermine the practices of categorization, racialization, and gendering these women have been subjected to throughout history. Through the sprouting "mess" in her documentary, Ozeki on the one hand connects the filmmaker's present to the geopolitical, economic, and gender dynamics in the past lives of Japanese migrants. On the other hand, subverting the androcentric power of image-making, Ozeki provides women with the opportunity to address each other in an engaged and creative way. Mixed-race subjects have long posed an invisible threat to the stability of racial categories in America. Given that racialization has influenced government policies since the country's inception, the subordination of various ethnic groups based on their physiognomy has served to control non-white people deemed socially inferior while attempting to keep white bloodlines "pure." Influenced by the human "scientific" taxonomy proposed by Carrolus Linneaus and Johann Blumenbach, among others, Western hegemonic discourse has historically centered on the assumption that human beings are rightfully divided into different races, which places white Europeans at the top of the hierarchy and non-white people from various ethnic groups scattered among the different classes below. This social stratification also functions through the belief in naturalized hypodescent, which forces mixed-race people to identify as monoracials, who are only able to claim their non-white parentage. Evelyn Alsultany calls this structure of racialization a "monoracial cultural logic" that dictates monoracial designations to the body politic. Imposed monoraciality has erased the majority of historical narratives about mixed-race people in the United States. The resulting lack of documentation seems to suggest that interracial marriages and their mixed-race offspring are anomalies in society, rare in previous generations, and only recently on the rise. In previous decades, however, social mores denounced interracial unions as impure and often erased them from the discourse. These silenced histories have been replaced by tropes in the social imaginary that depict mixed-race children as defective, deviant, and tragically trapped between two worlds. Nonetheless, Americans have been mixing and marrying individuals from other ethnic backgrounds for generations, and instances of interracial marriages have taken place in significant numbers between various ethnic groups. In this dissertation, I examine the experiences of mixed-race individuals with one Asian and one non-Asian parent as represented in performance, and I argue that one of the most critically important ways these mixed-Asian American histories have survived is through theatrical texts. These dramas elucidate the external social pressures and cultural limitations that have played a key role in the development of mixed-race identity. Further, plays written since the new millennium present mixed-race subjectivity in a different light, which, I assert, is due to the government's formal acknowledgment of the mixed-race population on the 2000 United States census. As a result, the mixed-race narrative in theater has begun to shift from one of the tragic Eurasian to that of a wholly integrated identity, one who shape shifts to resist the rigidity of racial designations.This dissertation traces the depiction of mixed-race Amerasians in American theater from the late-nineteenth century to the new millennium and investigates a new canon of politically-charged mixed-race Asian American plays. Through archival research, ethnographic methods, and cultural materialist readings of theatrical texts and their performances, I suggest that an understanding of this "doubly liminal" hapa consciousness, constructed and embodied in a liminal space outside of monoracial binaries, is crucial for the examination of the mixed-Asian American stories. These narratives, when transformed into performance texts, can often dismantle the social and cultural assignments that are imposed upon mixed-race bodies. They complete a historical narrative that begins in the nineteenth century and delivers us to the present day—to an age in which a post-racial society remains ever elusive.

My research analyzes how the remaking anew of tradition—the return to"traditional" birthing arts (home birth, midwife-assisted birth, water birth, "natural" birth)—has resulted in the commodification of indigenous culture and the re-inscription of racial inequalities on the one hand, and, despite feminist rhetoric about women's liberation from (masculine) biomedical hegemony, the reconfiguring of parent-child bonds in ways that again place the burden of correctly producing future bioconsumers on women's shoulders. I focus on the extremes of contemporary Mexican society—disenfranchised indigenous families and members of the global meritocracy—and in doing so, I demonstrate how citizenship retains value for some while being rendered an inadequate analytical frame for others. More specifically, I argue that the privileged do not position themselves as citizens through claims to public resources; instead, they accumulate cultural capital through privatized services. Through an examination of processes of racialization and patterns of bioconsumption, I critique the broad application of the concept of citizenship, and make a case for the consideration of the bioconsumer (individuals for whom market-based consumption of medical services plays a formative role in how their identities are syncretically portrayed and perceived). The main stakes of bioconsumption are the presentation of self and accrual of cultural capital. Furthermore, I demonstrate how what is under negotiation in the alternative birth movement is the social-moral body onto which identities get mapped. Close ethnographic study reveals how the so-called "humanization" of birth and the reduction of maternal and infant mortality are distant projects that are collapsed onto one another and produce an emerging ideology of "good parenthood." In this ideology, children represent parents' stake in the contemporary global meritocracy. This work therefore uncovers how traditional ways of birthing are being destroyed and reinvented through racialized class privilege, which is based on a model of neoliberal consumption that simultaneously promotes "humanity" and reinforces inequality by infusing transnational movements with reified class logics and racialization. I thus consider Mexican traditional midwivery as a unique lens for examining how indigeneity becomes an object of consumption via ethnomedical piracy within a transnational racialized economy. Through 28 months of in-depth, multi-sited research across Mexico, from October 2010 to November 2013, this dissertation analyzes the physical and social mobility of some individuals, and the relative immobility of others, through the lens of humanized birth. In writing this dissertation, I aim to make the following interventions:First, I disrupt notions of citizenship-making by placing under the same lens those for whom citizenship is always just out of reach and those for whom citizenship is not a concern as their privileged access to privatized markets allows for a supra-state existence. I offer the concept of "supranationalism" as a contribution to emerging literature that rethinks states as the consolidation of territory and government, thus opening up other ways of conceptualizing polity and geography. I use the topic of birth to provide ethnographic evidence of how biopower is not only imposed by states upon citizen-subjects; but by powerful, extra-governmental, social and economic forces operating in the context of neoliberalism, thus resulting in real material consequences and shaping health outcomes. Second, I deploy the concepts of racialization and power when I critique the ways in which the global alternative birth movement inadvertently appropriates and commodifies indigenous culture. When "indigeneity" is invoked in the realm of so-called "humanized" birth, the object is fetishized, separated entirely from its cultural, socioeconomic, and geographical context, and repackaged for popular consumption—leading me to rethink the relationship between neoliberal citizenship and consumerism. I use the example of midwifery in Mexico to examine racialized identities-turned-merchandise, with real effects for the bodies of women. Building upon studies that explore the political economy of the body under contemporary global capitalism, I use a transnational context to analyze the political economy of identities vis-à-vis the body.In this dissertation, I examine the disparate and unequal distribution of "traditional," and ethnomedical forms of "natural" birth among social collectivities. The dissertation examines the mobility of humanized birth practitioners and participants who travel across borders to contribute to ideology and practices being produced transnationally, while comparatively immobile women are socially situated in ways that preclude their participation in medical migrations. Thus, while my ethnographic research provides detailed examples of how humanized birth is reshaped and reconstituted in sites that bear stark contrast to the social and geographic locations where the humanized birth model was originally produced, I am more concerned with how politic economic terrains are not only traversed, but are themselves transformed by medical migration. Finally, I complexify notions of feminist liberation by asking how humanized birth may be the first step within a new regime of pressures and "requirements" presented by modern-day "good parenting." I resist viewing children only as commodities; however, I do argue that children represent parents' stake in our contemporary meritocracy—a system that naturalizes extreme inequality by allowing us to believe in democratic structures and the idea that education and proper preparation will open doors for children to a brilliant future. Furthermore, I suggest that meritocratic structures exert pressure in the womb. The difference between a privatized and public childhood begins in vitro with prenatal care.

Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples sheds light on the racialization of identities and its impact on mixed couples and families in the Soviet Union. In marked contrast to its Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union celebrated mixed marriages among its diverse ethnic groups as a sign of the unbreakable friendship of peoples and the imminent emergence of a single "Soviet people." Yet the official Soviet view of ethnic nationality became increasingly primordial and even racialized beginning in the 1960s, and in this context, Adrienne Edgar argues that mixed families and individuals found it impossible to transcend ethnicity, fully embrace their complex identities, and become simply "Soviet." Looking back on their lives in the Soviet Union, ethnically mixed people often reported that the "official" nationality in their identity documents did not match their subjective feelings of identity, that they were unable to speak "their own" native language, and that their ambiguous physical appearance prevented them from claiming the nationality with which they most identified. In all these ways, mixed couples and families were acutely and painfully affected by the growth of ethnic primordialism and by the tensions between the national and supranational projects in the Soviet Union. Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples is based on more than eighty in-depth oral history interviews with members of mixed families in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, along with published and unpublished Soviet documents, scholarly and popular articles from the Soviet press, memoirs and films, and interviews with Soviet-era sociologists and ethnographers

This book analyzes key popular culture artifacts linked with United States far-right extremism to illustrate how extremists use various narrative strategies to legitimate their interests and goals and to justify violent actions. Recognizing these narrative strategies and how they are used partly explains the back and forth moves between mainstream politics and the far-right of ideas and issues that used to remain within far-right circles. The main objective of this book is to utilize theoretical approaches that centralize processes of racialization to analyze and explain how far-right extremists utilize recognizable narratives to mainstream and communicate their ideas. The book will illustrate processes by which racialized subjects are produced and violence justified. In order to do so, the book concentrates on popular culture as sources of how the far-right constitutes their identities and goals. It first develops a methodological plan to study popular culture artifacts that is drawn from scholarship on race and discourse analysis in International Relations (IR). It then analyzes far-right use of key popular culture artifacts, such as magazines, memes, and manifestos, to note how extremist identities and interests are produced, publicly communicated, and mainstreamed. This will contribute to Security Studies and IRs understanding of far-right extremism, especially how they utilize similar narrative strategies as used in mainstream contexts to justify their calls for violence. Medieval and early modern Spanish monarchs governed through jurisdictional pluralism, placing corporate groups into competition with one another and delegating tax collection and the management of civil conflict to them. Doing so enabled some autonomy, but also constrained the way they interacted with others. This book examines these subordinate republics in two asynchronous locations: peoples of Muslim, Jewish, and sub-Saharan African descent in fifteenth-century Seville, and Indigenous and (sometimes) Black peoples in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Lima. It does so through two lenses-space and jurisdiction-which enable the reader to reimagine and supplement absent archival materials. At times, those in power wished to separate the subordinate republics: to contain their contamination, or to protect them from predatory influences. Using arcGIS mapping in conjunction with archival documentation, the book explores the ways that members of these republics utilized the urban environment in contradistinction to narratives of separation, producing their own hierarchies that intersected with local society. Jurisdiction was also permeable, as urban residents could venue-shop, but the existence of judges and law within communities meant that they could occasionally enact justice on their own terms. Finally, the book turns to two case studies, of Black republics (one extant in Seville but mostly refused in the empire), and of Lima's Cercado, an Indian town on the city's outskirts. These cases demonstrate the key functions of the republics but also the ways they participated in the racialization of identities in the Spanish world. The limited autonomy of the subordinate republic could also be a vehicle for producing discriminatory difference.

Juxtaposes Antonio Gramsci's work and critical race theory to offer a new understanding of tactics as a transformative practice. While scholars of social and political movements tend to analyze tactics in terms of their effectiveness in achieving specific outcomes, Robert F. Carley argues by contrast that tactics are, above all, what social movements do. They are not mere means to an end so much as they are a public form of expression pointing out injustices and making just demands. Rooted in a highly original analysis of the tactically mediated relationship between race and mobilization in the work of Italian philosopher and revolutionary Antonio Gramsci, Culture and Tactics demonstrates how tactics impact the organizational structures of social movements and expand the affinities of political communities. Carley looks at how Gramsci used innovative tactics to bridge perceptions of racial differences between factory workers and subaltern groups, the latter having been denigrated to the point of subhumanity by a complex Italian national racial economy. Newly envisioning Gramsci as a theorist of race within a broader context of social struggle, Carley connects Gramsci's insights into the political mobilizations of racialized subaltern groups to contemporary critical race theory and cultural studies of racialization and racism. Speaking across disciplines and drawing on a number of empirical examples, Carley offers a battery of original concepts to assist scholars and activists in analyzing the tactical practices of protests in which race is a central factor. "Accounts of Irish racialization in the United States have tended to stress Irish difference. Irish and the American Racial State takes a different stance. This interdisciplinary, transnational work uses an array of cultural artifacts, including novels, plays, songs, cartoons, government reports, laws, sermons, memoirs, and how-to manuals, to make its case. It challenges the claim that the Irish 'became white' in the United States, showing that the claim fails to take into full account the legal position of the Irish in the nineteenth-century US state--a state that deemed the Irish 'white' upon arrival. The Irish thus not only fitted into the US racial state; they helped to form it. Till now, little heed has been paid to the state's role in the Americanization of the Irish or to the Irish role in the development of US state institutions. Distinguishing American citizenship from American nationality, this volume journeys to California to analyze the means by which the Irish gained acceptance in both categories, at the expense of the Chinese. Along the way, it contests ideas that have taken hold within American studies. One is the notion that the Roman Catholic Church operated outside of the power structure of the nineteenth-century United States. On the contrary, Famine Irish and the American Racial State argues, the Irish-led corporate Catholic Church became deeply imbricated in US state structures. Its final chapter discusses a radical, transnational, Irish tradition that offers a glimpse at a postnational future"--Provided by publisher
