Transnational migration is seldom associated with Japan even though Japan has been dependent on immigrants for several generations. The research presented in this article explores a reform effort viewed as radical within the Japanese context that took place in a metropolitan school known for having one of the largest number of immigrant students in Japan, most of whom hail from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and China. While many of these "Newcomers" are of Japanese ancestry, absence from the homeland for two to four generations has left them without the cultural and linguistic skills to navigate the nuances of Japanese society. As a result, schools, which have never had to respond to the needs of immigrant youth, find themselves at a loss as to how to integrate young people whose parents have been drawn back from the Japanese diaspora through government policies designed to assuage the labor shortage of the 1980s and 1990s. Over the course of 5months of ethnographic field work in the community in which this school is located the author offers insights gleaned from extensive time spent with social workers, translators, government workers, teachers, staff, students, parents, and community liaison volunteers, all of whom shared their frustrations and challenges with the education of immigrant youth within the context and constraints of Japanese schools.

This report explores the ways in which the deserving/undeserving immigrant binary politically targets subject for incorporation into a national neoliberal project, while excluding others. Simultaneously, the author also investigates the ways in which these targeted subjects have organized in response to structural inequities and in the process, have been making their own sense of political subjectivity. Damals gelangten rund 13'000 Ungarnflüchtlinge in die Schweiz, wo ihre Aufnahme beispiellose Euphorie und Anteilnahme auslöste. Für die Immigranten galt es nach der Ankunft in der Schweiz, ihr Leben ohne Aussicht auf eine baldige Rückkehr neu einzurichten und zu gestalten. Im Vergleich mit anderen Flüchtlingsgruppen erweist sich die Akkulturation der Ungarn dabei als beispielhaft, zumal der eigene Akkulturationsverlauf von den Betroffenen überwiegend positiv bewertet wird.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the nature of intergenerational relationships in immigrant families, especially between immigrant parents and their children, many of whom were born and largely raised in the United States. This review begins with an analysis of the causes of tension and conflict as well as accommodation and cooperation between parents and children in immigrant families in the contemporary United States. We then examine what happens when parents and children are separated in transnational families—why this pattern occurs today and how it affects family relationships. We provide a historical-comparative perspective, discussing what is new about parent-child relations in immigrant families today in contrast to a century ago in the last great wave of immigration to the United States. Finally, a cross-national view reveals the different emphases in the social science literature on intergenerational relations in immigrant families in the United States and western Europe.

The German legal system has a category ("belonging to the German people") that regulates the immigration of (Spat)Aussiedlers ("late emigrants"). Since Reunification in 1990 until the present day, there have been a number of legislative changes to this group's "right to return." This article explores the usefulness of four partly overlapping explanations of these changes and discusses their interrelationship. Although many aspects of the policy were changed for pragmatic reasons (that is, to reduce this kind of immigration), the main category of "belonging to the people" was retained. En 1982, le marocain Hassan Bel Ghazi publiait un livre intitulé Deux cultures : exploitation et opportunisme. C'était pratiquement la première fois qu'un «hôte étranger» écrivait un ouvrage de ce genre aux Pays-Bas. Bel Ghazi y affirmait, entre autres, que «les migrants, qui (...) représentent une force vitale pour l'économie du pays, sont totalement absents en matière politique». Il reprochait aux Hollandais leur paternalisme et leur ingérence, contraire aux intérêts des immigrants. Selon lui, cette ingérence éloignait les immigrants des syndicats et les empêchait de développer leurs propres associations. Tout ceci contribuait à leur isolement politique.
Cette étude se propose de faire le point sur les déclarations provocatrices de Bel Ghazi. Dresse-t-il un tableau fidèle de la situation aux Pays-Bas et si oui, comment expliquer cette situation d'un point de vue théorique ? Background: Smoking behaviour among immigrants is assumed to converge to that of the host country's majority population with increasing duration of stay. We compared smoking prevalence among Turkish immigrants residing in two different countries (Germany (DE)/the Netherlands (NL)) between and within countries by time spent in Turkey and DE/NL. Methods: The German 2009 micro-census and the Dutch POLS database (national survey, 1997–2004) were analysed. An interaction variable with dichotomised length of stay (LOS) in Turkey (age: 0-17; 18+) and categorised LOS in the host country (immigration year: 1979 and earlier, 1980-1999, 2000-2009; the latter only for Germany) was generated. Age standardised smoking prevalences and sex-specific logistic regression models were calculated. Results: 6,517 Turkish participants were identified in Germany, 2,106 in the Netherlands. Age-standardised smoking prevalences were higher among Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands compared to those in Germany: 62.3% vs. 53.1% (men/lower education); 30.6% vs. 23.0% (women/lower education). A similar trend was observed for the majority population of both countries. The chance of being a smoker was lower among Turkish men with short LOS in Turkey and middle LOS in Germany/the Netherlands compared to those with short LOS in Turkey and long LOS in Germany/the Netherlands (NL: OR = 0.57[95% CI = 0.36-0.89]; DE: OR = 0.73[95% CI = 0.56-0.95]). Contrary to that, the chance of being a smoker was higher among Turkish men with long LOS in Turkey and middle LOS in Germany/the Netherlands compared to those with long LOS in Turkey and long LOS in Germany/the Netherlands (NL: OR = 1.35[95% CI = 0.79-2.33]; DE: OR = 1.44[95% CI = 1.03-2.02]). The effects for Turkish women were similar, but smaller and often non-significant. Conclusion: Turkish immigrants adapt their smoking behaviour towards that of the Dutch/German majority population with increasing duration of stay. This was particularly obvious among those who left Turkey before the age of 18 years - a group that needs tailored interventions to prevent further increases in smoking. Those who left Turkey as adults and spent a short time in the host countries show 'imported' smoking patterns. A limitation of this study is the use of cross-sectional data: a cohort effect cannot be ruled out. Our findings have to be confirmed with longitudinal data.

L'insertion socioprofessionnelle des personnes immigrantes est reconnue, autant dans le domaine de la recherche que des institutions gouvernementales, comme l'un des principaux vecteurs d'intégration. Concurremment, le gouvernement du Québec choisit la majorité des personnes immigrantes pour leur potentiel d'insertion socioprofessionnelle dans le marché du travail québécois. Ce potentiel d'insertion est entre autres mesuré en fonction du nombre d'années de scolarité. Or, de nombreux immigrants arrivent au Québec après avoir effectué très peu d'années d'étude. Si plusieurs chercheurs se sont penchés sur les processus d'insertion socioprofessionnelle des immigrants dits « qualifiés » ou « économiques », très peu de recherches portent sur ces mêmes processus pour la population immigrante peu scolarisée. Cette étude qualitative a ainsi pour objectif d'explorer l'expérience d'insertion socioprofessionnelle des personnes immigrantes peu scolarisées en s'appuyant sur les concepts de la théorie de la transition. Les données recueillies lors des entrevues avec sept personnes immigrantes peu scolarisées engagées dans un programme d'insertion a permis de mieux comprendre les motivations qui les mènent à intégrer le marché du travail par l'entremise d'un programme d'intégration socioprofessionnelle, à identifier les caractéristiques personnelles et environnementales qui favorisent ce processus ainsi qu'à explorer les adaptations qui favorisent son bon déroulement. ; In research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebec's job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrant's integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrant's integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theory's concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduct
