Established in 1955, the Leipzig Film Festival's location in the German Democratic Republic deeply implicated it in cultural and political competition between East and West Germany, opening a political and artistic exchange that would have otherwise been impossible. Screened Encounters represents the definitive history of this key event, recounting its history from its founding until reunification, and tracing the outsize influence it exerted on international cultural relations during the Cold War
"This book examines the various film festivals where Korean cinema plays a significant role, both inside and outside of Korea, focusing on their history, structure and function, and analysis of successful festival films. Using Korean film festivals and Korean cinema at international film festivals as its primary lens, this interdisciplinary volume explores the shifting relationships between the multi-media genre of film and the fast-growing changing world of film festival cultures. It examines the changing aesthetics of Korean film in a transcultural context and historical (dis)continuity from a variety of angles from film and media studies, literary and cultural studies, Korean studies, Japanese studies, and also from film festival practice. Moreover, through comprehensive examinations of both domestic and international film festivals from the perspectives of production, distribution and marketing it highlights the reception of Korean cinema outside of Korea in an increasingly globalised industry. Featuring the contributions of expert scholars of international film and Korean cinema, in addition to interview material with a practicing film professional, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Korean and Asian film and media studies, as well as those interested in the impact of film festivals more generally"--
It is an undisputed fact that watching films is a great way to learn a foreign language in context and to be exposed to real life conversations, new vocabulary, etc. Foreign language films also provide a diverse cultural experience as they often focus on various current social aspects, politics as well as history. Therefore, film is a useful tool to help people who learn foreign languages achieve a high level of competences, which are essential to successful communication. A film canon would be here of great assistance both to teachers as well as learners. The aim of this paper is to discuss the existing German film canon and also to present the results of a research project conducted at the Adam-Mickiewicz-University (Poznań, Poland) with German Philology students that justify the need to create a film canon for the purpose of teaching and learning of German as a foreign language.

Sweden has commonly been regarded as a striking example of a social democratic welfare-stateregime (Esping-Andersen 1996), characterized by strong state governance and active involvementin welfare matters. In the last two decades, however, the Swedish public sector and educationsystem have been radically and extensively transformed in a neo-liberal direction, a move that waspreceded by extensive decentralization of decision-making from the state to municipalities andschools. In this article the scope, character and some of the consequences of internal and externalmarketization of Swedish education in the early 2000s are summarized, and the impact ofcompetition on the internal workings of upper secondary schools is highlighted in particular. We conclude that the external marketization of education has proceeded a long way and Swedenalso fully embraces new public management, i.e. 'inner marketization', of education in mostrespects. However, aspects of the older social democratic policy paradigm are still visible withregard to the assigned functions, values and governance of education.
