This paper presents novel reduced form evidence on the association between international trade agreements that include disciplines on public procurement practices reflected in the WTO Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA) and preferential trade agreements (PTAs) and public sector imports following the 2008 financial crisis. The results are suggestive of such international disciplines acting as an effective commitment device: GPA membership is associated with a significantly higher import share following the crisis than is observed for countries that are not members. We also find evidence that the GPA and PTAs that cover public procurement are partial substitutes.

A discipline cannot pretend to be such if political borders are reflected in its organisation, methodologies or practices. While pluralistic approaches are highly desirable, it is crucial for any discipline worthy of the name to professionalise itself. This article argues that in spite of imperfections, drawbacks and differentiated development, huge progress has been made towards this goal through the setting up of common standards, improved Ph.D. and post-doctoral training and international mobility. AbstractBetween 1895 and 1917 the Atlanta Sociological Laboratory made substantial contributions to the discipline of sociology, including the establishment of the first American school of sociology, institutionalization of method triangulation, institutionalization of the insider researcher, and institutionalization of the public acknowledgment of one's research. Despite these contributions that predate the Chicago School, the W. E. B. Du Bois led laboratory remains in the margins of American sociological discourse. This paper examines the contributions of the Atlanta Sociological Laboratory, offers explanations for the school's more than 100‐year marginalization and examines its legacy in the discipline.

In the 1960s and 1970s Chicago School and public choice economics crossed the traditional boundaries separating economics from other academic disciplines by applying economic analysis to areas usually deemed beyond the scope of economics. Today, a new generation of pioneering economists are taking this development further by crossing the boundaries not only between academic disciplines, but also between academia and mainstream popular culture, by presenting their economic analyses of non‐standard topics in a format designed to be accessible to the general reader. Four recent books reviewed here are at the forefront of this new economics without frontiers.

In the decades after 1550 the soldiery of the Netherlands witnessed the disappearance of the Landsknecht, who had the right to participate in decision-making and shape his daily life. He gradually became a mere "soldier", subject to stricter discipline and control. This development accelerated after 1572 because William of Orange needed to maintain the support of the inhabitants of the Netherlands for the Revolt. Better discipline and control over his soldiers were imperative in this. Meanwhile, a progressive process of proletarianization left them largely unable to resist: they simply had nowhere else to go.

Since the Second World War, the field of organizations studies has grown substantially in the number of researchers, number of publications, and amount of research produced. It has moved from being a combination of established disciplines to becoming a quasi-discipline of its own, with its own journals and professional associations. It has established a standardized set of ancestors, a stylized history. It has solidified an academic home in business schools. This history has implications for understanding both the future of organizations research and the social dynamics of the development of scholarly communities.

The paper critiques the manner by which political science is practiced in the Philippines. Despite changes in the discipline, Philippine political science remains fixated on statist interpretations of politics. It is against this backdrop that a Filipino political ecology is imagined, as a discipline that seeks to combine political economy with cultural ecology. As the author argues, there is much to be done to open, reproduce and nurture spaces for a Filipino political ecology. And this will require changes in the manner by which we theorize and practice political as well as environmental sciences.

This study reports findings about fundamental and regular schools, both types being component schools in a large public school system. Comparative data concerning achievement of students, school climate, discipline, student self-concept and parental attitudes were gathered. On achievement variables fundamental school students performed as well or better than students in regular schools. Fundamental schools rated better on learning climate, discipline, and suspensions. The self-concepts of students in both types of schools were about the same. No evidence was uncovered that would warrant a recommendation that the fundamental schools be discontinued in the system.

This article is an attempt to explore the frames of reference of two disciplines—political science and social anthropology—as they affect the study of relations between the national 'centre' and the local 'periphery' in African countries. It is exploratory, in that it reviews the assumptions and concepts characteristic of the disciplines, instead of trying to crystallise a new model. In the light of this comparison it then considers the status of what Clifford Geertz has called 'the clichés of commonsense sociology'.1 It examines particularly one item in this collection of clichés, the notion of 'tribalism'.

The emergence, in the past two decades, of a separate discipline of `Formal Organizations' has been associated with the general acceptance of a Durkheimian view of organizations as `natural systems' integrated by a value consensus and a de-emphasis on the processes through which they are related to the social structure. The similarities, in these respects, between Human Relations and Structural-Functionalism are suggested and an alternative Social Action model is outlined. It is suggested that this latter perspective on organizational behaviour fits most easily into the older discipline of `Industrial Sociology'.

Prof. Edward (Ed) Diener (1946-2021), a pioneer in positive psychology, passed away on the 27th of April 2021 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah (Salt Lake City Tribune, 2021). As one of the most influential psychologists of the discipline, Ed Diener pushed the boundaries of our understanding of positive psychological functioning, subjective well-being, and happiness (Layous, 2020). As one of the Top 200 most cited researchers across all disciplines and fields, he will be most remembered for founding the scientific study of subjective well-being (SWB) and happiness (Bakshi, 2019). Diener developed the concept of subjective well-being by exploring the factors that influence people's life satisfaction (Diener et al., 2017a). He studied the individual causes of subjective well-being, such as close social relationships, income, meaning and purpose, personality, and societal causes, such as economic development, low corruption and crime, and a healthy environment (Diener et al., 2018). His research has discovered both universal and culture-specific causes and consequences of SWB and influenced governmental policy (Oishi et al., 1999). In respect of his memory, the purpose of this paper is threefold: (a) to reflect upon his career journey, (b) to celebrate his significant contributions to the discipline, and (c) to provide personal reflections of those who worked closely with him over the past 50 years.

In the famous (some would say infamous) final chapter of his discipline-defining volume,Sociobiology: The New Synthesis, biologist Edward O. Wilson invited us to consider humankind as if we were zoologists from another planet. In this light, Wilson said, "the humanities and social sciences shrink to specialized branches of biology" (1975:547). One of the functions of the new discipline of sociobiology, Wilson suggested, was "to reformulate the foundations of the social sciences…" (1975:4). Wilson cautioned, however, that it "remains to be seen" whether or not the social sciences can be "truly biologized" in this fashion.

There is a link between tackling the debt crisis, the ESFS and economic governance. If there is indeed a clear interconnection between sovereign debt and the banking crisis, there is also a clear link between the debt crisis and fiscal discipline. This context has helped shape the trend towards a governance which would include the elements described in preceding chapters: more effective preventative action, the consideration of debts and not just deficits in the functioning of the SGP, the inclusion of macro-economic imbalances in the surveillance and corrective processes, graduated and earlier sanctions being taken in a process which would leave minimal discretion to the Council, and national ownership of fiscal discipline by imposing requirements on Member States' budgetary frameworks. We will look at this subject in four successive sections: monitoring, which is now more explicitly set out in the European Semester; incentive action under the Europe 2020 Strategy and the Euro Plus Pact; normative regulations, and a final section on national ownership and in particular, the transposition into national rules of EU fiscal discipline.
