An increasing number of firms are engaging in social and environmental initiatives beyond their core business activities. While much has been written about why business should spend resources on social and environmental causes, relatively few studies have systematically addressed the question of why certain companies actually do engage in such activities. A notable exception is literature on the 'business case' for corporate social responsibility, which argues that good social and environmental performance will positively affect a company's financial results. The evidence on this link, however, is mixed. Even if there is an economic rationale, it is not clear why some companies engage in social activities while others do not. And, why do many more companies today 'see' the business case than in the past? This paper maps out the theoretical terrain exploring this question and categorizes the various existing explanations for corporate social engagement.
Abstract: In democratic life, community participation plays a critical role. This is because the ultimate goal of a democracy being built is to create direct public participation. One form of democratic development is through elections. To see community participation in general elections, it can be done through social exchanges. Therefore, this study aims to dissect the social exchange theory perspective of people's participation in democratic life through general elections. Studying social exchanges between the community and political elites is fair. It does not violate regulations—descriptive qualitative research method with primary and secondary data retrieval through sources relevant to the research object. Humans are rational beings who always count the sacrifices and rewards of a situation. In any condition, humans will still think about what benefits they get. In the context of democratic life through elections between the public and political elites, it is seen that social exchanges occur between elites who need help (needs votes) and people who look more at economic benefits and psychological comfort. In this study, the author also reveals mutually beneficial relationships between the elite and the community that lead to social exchanges. Keywords: Social Exchange, Community Participation, General Election, Democracy.

; At present, Latin American is caught in a paradoxical situation. On one hand, its levels of poverty are lower than those of other regions of the world, i.e. Africa or Asia, while, on the other, the markers for social differences are the highest of the planet. Although the article underlines that processes of democratization have taken place, almost all countries today have legitimate governments chosen by the people, and macroeconomic terms the rates of growth have been considerable, economic development has, however, not been neither as constant nor as vigorous as expected, and it has not been possible to reduce the poverty index.

This study analyzes the impact of social capital on national policy satisfaction in Korea. Although social capital has been investigated in previous studies, most of them have been limited to the local government level. This study concerns national policies and uses data from the 2007 Survey of Citizen Perceptions of the Public Sector. In total 1,200 people responded from across the country. Using factor analysis, social capital factors were extracted: participation in political networks, participation in nonpolitical networks, trust in others, and altruism. Trust in others was statistically significant to all levels of policy satisfaction; however, other variables were significant only to certain policies. Unexpectedly, participation in political networks, by means of political demonstrations and online debate, was not significant with regard to satisfaction with any policy.
This article focuses on social work professionals from both sides of divided Cyprus. Cyprus presents a very interesting, yet under-explored, case study as it remains an island de facto divided. The division has resulted in the physical and political separation of the two most populous ethnic communities (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots) for over 50 years. This article offers an exploration of the views of social workers on both sides. Through a quantitative approach, participants in the study were able to express their thoughts and beliefs on the 'other' and on social work in a post-conflict environment.
Abstract – The concept of social work as a profession is inseparable from the development of capitalist social relations, and does not constitute a homogeneous bloc. According to Netto, the corporate projects in dispute for the maintenance or transformation of the existing social structures are expressed in professional projects. In this way, this work seeks to contribute to the analysis of the construction of social work in Portugal, grasping the meaning attributed by fascism to the profession in the process of institutionalization, from 1930 to 1950. It is also intended to identify social workers[2] who have been involved in movements of opposition and resistance to the regime and to perceive how, in the 1960s and 1970s, the profession was distanced of the initially attributed meaning, from the corporatist trade union organization. Keywords: fascism in Portugal; opposition; resistance; social work; distancing; union action; social workers.
