AbstractThe study of professions has been dominated by Anglo‐American models, with their focus on a small group of legally licensed occupations. The field has recently shifted, mainly through studies of European experience, to a wider examination of the social management of expert workers. Very little has been written about developments in Africa and their implications for the way in which we might think about professions. This paper presents a case study of the role and practices of the medical profession in Burkina Faso, which has a relatively open market for the supply of healing services and limited regulation of the suppliers, whether physicians or traditional practitioners. The study returns to classic questions about the extent to which practice is shaped by the nature of occupational niches within the division of labor or to the development of a distinctive moral character among the workers within that niche.

This paper explores the political shifts that take place in participatory design (PD) when the focus is upon co-designing ongoing future societal relations, beyond the immediacy of designing objects or services during project-time. Reflecting on connectedness, it looks at the politics of participation through the lens of people's interdependence, using feminist concepts of 'care' to explore the ethical commitments of designing. In particular, it speaks to Greenbaum's claim, 20 years ago, that 'we have the obligation to provide people with the opportunity to influence their own lives' (1993:47). We explore the questions this raises now, as we design in an increasingly distributed and heterogeneous socio-technical context, to give a contemporary take on long-term commitments to political and ethical outcomes in participatory design. We adopt a framework of vertical differentiation to study the issue of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We develop a model of duopoly in a two-country setting, in which firms choose the country of location, the level of CSR and finally compete in the market à la Bertrand. We show that: i) at equilibrium the two firms choose different levels of CSR, i.e. an "ethical" and a "neutral" firm coexist in the market; ii) regardless of its location choice, the "neutral" firm undertakes a level of CSR equal to the minimum international standard; iii) the location choice of both the "ethical" and the "neutral" firm depends on the relative costs of CSR in the two countries; in addition the choice of the "ethical" firm is influenced by the distribution of consumers' tastes for CSR, while the choice of the "neutral" firm is affected by the level of the minimum international standard for CSR.

When historians turn to the social sciences for help with the task of ordering their data or making their sources speak more clearly, the results can be rewarding in unexpected ways. So it is if one applies the twin concepts profession and professionalization to the German context-in particular, to the history of German engineers in the nineteenth century. At first sight, an idea like the "professionalization of the German engineers" seems straightforward enough. In tandem with the growth of Germany's science-based industries and unparalleled system of technical education, it suggests the emergence of the men who occupied the critical positions in these institutions and embodied technological progress. A notion such as the "rise of the German engineering profession," therefore, stirs visions of a grand metamorphosis, in which the land of poets and thinkers—and of Junkers, bureaucrats, and mandarins—turned into the world of Siemens, Porsche, Mannesmann, Bosch, Diesel, Daimler-Benz, etc.

Se trata de un estudio observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal y prospectivo, en el servicio de consulta central de Acupuntura del Hospital Andino de la ciudad de Riobamba, en el periodo comprendido entre enero y diciembre del año 2016, con el propósito de demostrar el impacto social de la Aurículopuntura en el tratamiento de pacientes diagnosticados con estrés y trastornos de ansiedad. El universo y muestra fue conformado por todos los pacientes (n=127) que acudieron a consulta central con el diagnóstico establecido. Obteniendo como resultado que la mayoría del grupo de estudio son mujeres de entre 41 y 60 años que llegaron al servicio sin remisión, los que con mayor frecuencia presentaban alteraciones del sistema cardiovascular y osteomioarticular, así como cambios emocionales, que con el tratamiento por 12 semanas mostraron una mejoría satisfactoria (93%). Los resultados obtenidos evidenciaron la efectividad de este tratamiento no convencional, concluyendo que la aurículopuntura, se puede generalizar como tratamiento alternativo para el estrés y la ansiedad, dadas las pruebas positivas y probadas como efectivas, lo que incide favorablemente en la calidad de vida de los pacientes.

In all election, parties & candidates face a clear dilemma on how to invest their communicational resources: either on air (mass media) or on land (direct contact on social networks). Each of the two main contenders of the 2006 elections centered its efforts in one of these possibilities. PAN used mass media, while PRD invested in social networks until the first presidential debate, & afterwards turned towards the extensive use of radio & television ads. This article seeks to evaluate how effective were the campaigns of both parties. Based on a multilevel logistic model, we find that the social networks had a significant impact on the preference for the PRD candidate. This impact varied according to the initial preferences for the PRD candidate in the electoral precinct. We find no evidence, however, that communicating with neighbors or the social networks effect had a direct influence for the pan candidate. Adapted from the source document.
