Europe was swept by a wave of revolution in 1848 that had repercussions stretching well beyond the Continent. Governments fell in quick succession or conceded significant reforms, before being rolled back by conservative reaction. Though widely perceived as a failure, the revolution ended the vestiges of feudalism, broadened civil society and strengthened the state prior to the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation of the latter part of the nineteenth century. This volume brings together essays from leading specialists on the international dimension, national experiences, political mobilisation, reaction and legacy.

THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF THE DISCOURSE OF MESTIZAJE, PRIMARILY OF AFRICAN EUROPEAN MESTIZAJE, AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE INTELLECTUAL FORMATION AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE NATION AND OF NATIONAL CULTURAL IDENTITY FROM 1845 TO 1959. IT EXAMINES THE ROLE THAT SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC WRITINGS AND CULTURAL CRITICISM HAVE PLAYED IN CREATING AND EXTENDING RACE-DEFINED EXCLUSIONS AND INCLUSIONS.

Unintended Affinities' examines the ways in which German and Polish historians of the nineteenth-century regarded the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. 0The book parallels how historians approached the old Reich and the Commonwealth within the framework of their national history. Ko?uchowski analyzes how German and Polish nationalistic historians, who played central roles in propagandizing a glorious past that justified a centralized modern state, struggled with how to portray the very decentralized and multi-ethnic empires that preceded their time.
