This study investigates incumbent firm responses to disruptive innovation in the rapidly evolving South Korean retail industry. The study explores the factors behind an incumbent firm's decision-making processes when responding to disruptive innovation and examines the reasons behind varied incumbent responses. It investigates the agents that influence a firm's decision by conducting the qualitative case study of a South Korean retail giant, Lotte. By collecting archival data from various sources, this paper was able to analyze different interviews and statements of the chief executive officer (CEO). From the analysis, it was determined that the firm's overall actions were aligned with the CEO's assertions. Thus, this paper asserts that Lotte's response to disruptive innovation was directly influenced by the CEO's attention. The results of this study further add to the discourse of disruptive innovation by highlighting the importance of CEO discretion in deciding a firm's direction and by further emphasizing the relationship between managerial leadership and innovation.

After the events of "the Nakbah" (or, the Catastrophe) in 1948, Jewish military and paramilitary forces dispossessed over 800,000 Palestinians, forcing them to live as refugees. In the process of leaving, not only were their homes and land confiscated but also their cultural resources. In the intervening years, Israel has banned and censored Palestinian books and publications, and has imprisoned, deported, and assassinated Palestinian journalists, writers, and artists. These actions have spurred organizations such as the American Library Association to introduce resolutions sanctioning Israeli measures, only to see these resolutions watered-down to the point of inaction due to the intervention and agitation of pro-Israeli pressure groups. This paper describes and itemizes the actual Israeli destruction, looting and censorship of Palestinian libraries, archives, and cultural institutions both within 1948 and 1967 Palestine, as well those established by the Palestinian refugee diaspora. The paper also portrays how Israel classifies and restricts or denies access to archival materials to secure control of the historical narrative. It then delineates the deliberate Israeli harassment, imprisonment and assassination of Palestinian writers, journalists, intellectuals, and other cultural workers that have occurred since 1948. All these actions belie Israel's self-serving propaganda image as a beacon of democracy.

Archives and records are the tools that facilitate transparency, accountability and preserve collective social memory. They provide the mirror revealing governance, providing administrative and technical measuring instruments to ascertain the contexts and consequences of intended objectives, such as the promulgation and execution of water related policies. South Africa faces a water crisis and concerns exist about the governance of water affairs. Concerns and prospects for the creation of a water archive have been recommended. The prospects that such an initiative could provide is for better care and preservation of water-related records, including records on water services, water conservation and demand management currently across national government, municipalities and twelve water boards. The concept of the archives being an area storing dusty documents is being transformed, with the aid of technology. Through the digital environment, an archive can integrate hardcopy and digital material in a sustainable manner, accessible to a wide-range of researchers both within the archival institution and virtually to a different place and time zone. A dedicated "water archive" capturing and preserving water related information sources would provide water sector managers, engineers, scientists, researchers and administrators, with effective access to water-related information sources, as well as opportunities to contribute to the sustainability and further expansion of this archive.

Se describe (indiza) y analiza la documentación del fondo "Capitanía General y Gobernaciones del año 1815" del Archivo General de la Nación (AGN) de Venezuela, con el fin de facilitar el acceso y disponibilidad de la información, a través del desarrollo de una base de datos bajo el software "File Maker" aplicando la Norma Internacional de Descripción Archivística (ISAD-G). Se indiza un total de 100 documentos del año 1815 que permiten analizar la situación política, militar, social y geográfica de la época. Se identifica la tipología documental, el asunto, autores y procedencia de los documentos. Se reconoce la importancia de la indización y la aplicación de las normas de indización y de descripción (ISAD-G) para el mejor acceso y uso de estos formatos históricos, lo cual contribuye al desarrollo de un sistema de información histórica. ; Documents from Fondo Capitanía General y Gobernaciones, Sección Revolución y Gran Colombia at the General Archives of the Nation corresponding to the year 1815, are described and analyzed to ease information access and retrieval. To this, a data base was developed with File Maker according to the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD-G). A total of 100 documents from the year 1815 were indexed. Thus, political, military, social, and geographical situations can be studied and analyzed. Document typology, subject, author, and document origin were identified. Indexation and ISAD-G are important for improving access to historical data and documents, contributing to a system of historical information. ; 69-92

This study explores how a state-based franchisee association of a multinational quick-service restaurant franchisor introduced three world-first innovations through the activation of the five dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation (EO). The antecedents to this activation were also explored. A historical extended case study focusing on a revelatory case was undertaken. In-depth analysis using a rigorous qualitative methodology was facilitated by the triangulation of informant interviews, publicly available data, archival data, and artefacts. The three innovations explored involved the apparent activation of all five dimensions of EO by the franchisee association. The franchisee association's structure and the provenance of its franchisee members, in being either externally recruited or internally recruited, appeared to have a bearing on whether product or process innovations were pursued. Five antecedents that enhance the propensity of franchisee associations to activate the dimensions of EO were also identified, and a preliminary model was constructed. Whilst the EO of franchisors and franchisees has previously been examined, this study is the first to explore franchisee associations as a vehicle for EO. With around 75% of franchisors incorporating some form of franchisee association, better understanding how to harness their innovative potential could bestow a competitive advantage upon those franchise systems able to do so.

Describes the difficulties encountered by historians who attempt to review contemporary French archives in spite of a 1979 law providing access. The French state monitors what can be examined, even by professional historians, & is especially protective of any material that might offend the official powers. This practice allowed the collaborationist past of former President Francois Mitterrand to be concealed until he was near death & still hides many particulars of the Vichy government. In general, Vichy scholarship represents official views & the few dissenting voices have faced the possibility of being ostracized. The role of historians in revealing past transgressions, & the risky business of dealing with contemporary events, are discussed. J. Lindroth

The Roper Center, located at Williams Coll (Williamstown, Mass), is the major library of sample survey data in the world today. Currently, over 60 survey org's in the US & abroad are placing the basic data from their studies at the Center, thus making them available to scholars for secondary analysis. To date, approximately 2,800 studies, dating from 1936 to the present, & conducted in 39 countries, have been sent to the Roper Center. Access to these data is granted to accredited scholars, & others doing res in the public interest. Over 2,500 scholars from all parts of the world have thus far made use of the Center's data, res facilities, & services. AA.

Third sector organizations are oftentimes seen as contributing to a robust civil society. Yet the dominant modes of third sector organizational governance often adhere to a unitary orientation. The over-reliance on unitary modes of governance introduces two challenges: first, organizational stakeholders are kept from utilizing participatory mechanisms that would enable them to act as societal intermediaries, and; second, these organizations may underperform due to the artificial separation of stakeholders from participating in governance. This paper addresses calls to widen our knowledge by translating theory into practice through a discussion about the efficacy of pluralistic governance. The co-operative enterprise in introduced to focus analyses on pluralist modes of stakeholder governance. A specific co-operative's governance structure and practice is introduced—Choctaw Electric Co-operative—through an archival analyses of secondary media accounts of a stakeholder-led reform initiative in rural Oklahoma. The Ostrom Design Principles—a diagnostic used to assess institutional robustness—are applied to demonstrate the shortsightedness of unitary governance, and highlight the potential benefits of pluralistic stakeholder engagement. Knowledge is widened in two ways: first, empirical analyses of co-operative enterprise may provide for significant insights and innovations in third sector governance, and; second proper systems of pluralistic governance exhibit enormous capacity to better orient the firm toward better serving the stakeholder base, improving performance and institutional robustness, while empowering stakeholders as societal intermediaries.
