In June and July of 2017, a research team representing the Universidad T??cnica Particular de Loja and the University of Idaho conducted applied qualitative social science research using participatory workshops in five communities on the outskirts of Loja, Ecuador. The workshops explored the possibilities for Universidad T??cnica Particular de Loja and the communities to collaborate on conservation projects. We sought to identify the most pressing environmental concerns in the communities and understand how Universidad T??cnica Particular de Loja could collaborate in addressing these issues. This case study highlights the challenges we faced in recruiting participants for these workshops and offers some ideas for researchers in a similar context. Recruitment challenges centered around the difficulties of building relationships of trust between the academic institutions and the communities, and a sense that the communities were overburdened by agency-led development projects. In addition to recruitment challenges, we also describe other lessons learned about working in this international context, including difficulties with scheduling, communication, technology, and using food as an incentive for participation. The aim of this case study is to provide readers with an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities of conducting research in an international community context.

In this handbook social science researchers who focus on sustainability present and discuss their findings, including empirical work, case studies, teaching and learning innovations, and applied projects. As such, the book offers a basis for the dissemination of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of research projects, especially initiatives which have influenced behavior, decision-making, or policy. Furthermore, it introduces methodological approaches and projects which aim to offer a better understanding of sustainability across society and economic sectors. This multidisciplinary overview presents the work of researchers from across the spectrum of the social sciences. It stimulates innovative thinking on how social sciences influence sustainable development and vice-versa

AbstractThe ubiquity of data in the twenty-first century provides unprecedented opportunities for social science research, but it also creates troubling possibilities for privacy violations. The emerging field of statistical disclosure control (SDC) studies how data collectors and analysts can find an optimal solution to balancing privacy protection and data utility. This article introduces SDC to readers in the applied political science research community and outlines its implications for analyzing individual-level data. The vocabulary of SDC is introduced and is followed with a discussion emphasizing just how easy it is to break almost any release of supposedly "anonymized" data. The article then describes how SDC measures almost always destroy the ability of researchers to accurately analyze complex survey data. These results are in conflict with increasing trends toward greater transparency in the social sciences. A discussion of the future of SDC concludes the article.

Federal courts must decide claims by individual members of the US Armed Forces that they have been mistreated by their superiors. A review of recent court decisions involving questions of morale & discipline shows that government lawyers have begun to justify commanders' actions on the grounds of social science concepts, eg, group cohesion. Those justifications are examined by applying models developed to evaluate the use of social science findings in lawsuits (derived from Monahan's & Walker's "Social Authority: Obtaining, Evaluating and Establishing Social Science in Law," University of Pennsylvania Law Review, 1986, 134 [no additional reference information provided]). It is concluded that cohesion arguments have no place in the courtroom. Modified HA
