Qualitative research into the lives and experiences of young fathers has seen some increased interest in recent years, yet comprehensive understandings of the 'doing' of such research remain absent from the literature. The small existing literature positions young men who are fathers as potentially difficult to research, in terms of access and encounters. This article draws on experiences and reflections from two UK-based research projects with young men who are fathers to explore the practice of qualitative work with this particular group of participants. Beyond the choice of methodology, there appear to be several elements pertaining to the practice of researching the lives of young men who are fathers that may require consideration. Through discussion of gender, class, context, authenticity and rapport, the article argues that researching young men is not inherently problematic but is a practice which requires consideration and substantial reflexion in order to produce fruitful research encounters for both parties. This article therefore seeks to add nuance and insight into the experience of researching with young men who are fathers, and in doing so, adds sophistication to our limited understandings of qualitative encounters with this group.

Die Bedeutung subjektwissenschaftlicher Methoden in der Psychologie wird erörtert. Zunächst werden Unterschiede zwischen den qualitativen und quantitativen Ansätzen in den Human- und Sozialwissenschaften und in der Psychologie erläutert. Dann werden einige wesentliche Gemeinsamkeiten diskutiert, insbesondere eine naturalistische Gegenstandssicht im Rahmen der konkreten Forschungspraxis, die mit einer Ausblendung der Subjektivität der Forschenden einhergeht, und eine naturalistische Forschungssicht im Rahmen methodologischer Reflexion, die durch eine Vernachlässigung der Kontextualität von Forschung gekennzeichnet ist. Es wird gezeigt, dass beides in einer teilweise unkritischen Übernahme traditioneller wissenschaftstheoretischer Imperative begründet ist, deren Allgegenwart auch für qualitative Forschung sich mit wirkungsvollen persönlichen und sozialen Widerständen im Wissenschaftskontext zu verbünden scheint.

In dieser Einleitung stellen wir die FQS-Schwerpunktausgabe zur Erforschung von Zeit vor. Ausgangspunkt ist, dass Zeit ein Grundelement sozialen Geschehens ist, dem somit Relevanz in unterschiedlichen Forschungsfeldern zukommt. In dem Themenschwerpunkt bündeln wir verschiedene Studien und Ansätze unter der Frage, vor welchen Herausforderungen eine zeitsensible qualitative Sozialforschung steht. Mit Blick auf die hier versammelten Beiträge sprechen wir vier Ebenen an: Erstens wird deutlich, dass zeitanalytische Fragen nicht nur in einer eigenen Bindestrich-Wissenschaft, sondern in diversen Themenfeldern erkenntnisfördernd sind. Zweitens werden mit den jeweils gewählten Methoden Zugänge zu verschiedenen Zeitkonzeptionen möglich. Gleiches gilt drittens für die gewählten Theorien. Viertens lädt der Sonderband dazu ein, sich auch mit der zeitlichen Verfasstheit von Dingen auseinanderzusetzen. Mit den Aufsätzen wollen wir auf diesen Ebenen und darüber hinaus zu einer zeitanalytischen Forschungsarbeit anregen.

Graduate students initiating qualitative research, like any inquiry, must hone and refine what they will study--the purpose of the research. Without clarity in the research purpose, the study's design will not likely unfold in a systematic way. However, narrowing one's research focus, such that methods follow research question, is much easier said than done. Through this case, I (Iverson) used a qualitative study as a teaching tool in an Advanced Qualitative research course, and will describe how this one project permitted one student (Seher) to learn about, and apply, varied methodological approaches. An initial basic interpretive study of faculty's sabbatical experiences developed into a feminist study of academic mother's sabbatical experiences. In particular, this case will focus on research design differences, in an effort to help novice researchers see how important it is to refine ones research purpose and questions.

Exploring perceptions, experiences and determinants of youth gambling is crucial for understanding both the impact of youth gambling now and the antecedents of future behaviour. Qualitative research plays an important role in exploring these processes, yet to date, there has been no systematic review of qualitative scientific literature of youth gambling behaviour. A rapid review of three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) and grey literature was conducted to map what qualitative research has been conducted, to identify gaps and discern emerging theories or themes about youth gambling behaviour. Peer-reviewed studies were included if they qualitatively explored youth experiences or perceptions of gambling. Narrative and thematic synthesis identified key descriptive and analytical themes covered by the studies. From 75 studies, 21 papers were included. Studies focused on youth perceptions of gambling (including advertising) and/or the factors shaping behaviour. Those which examined perceptions highlighted the normalcy of gambling in the minds of youth and its embeddedness in everyday life but also ambiguity and nuance around their differing perceptions of what gambling is. Studies emphasised the relationship between people (family, peers), place, technology and advertising as key facilitators of behaviour. This review shows young people's perceptions of gambling differs from legal and legislative definitions, which risks underestimating the nature and extent of youth gambling behaviour. There are also notable gaps in knowledge, specifically around the role of technology in shaping gambling behaviours beyond consideration of access and availability. There is a pressing need to better understand the whole techno-ecosystem in which gambling is situated and young people's relationship with it to understand youth gambling.

Through a self-reflective discussion of the author's experiences in preparing to conduct an exploratory pilot study about an aspect of child welfare practice, this article articulates some of the potential disjunctures facing the academically based qualitative researcher in gaining access to and engaging study informants in a practice setting that interfaces with child welfare. The qualitative study sought to understand the experiences of parents and preventive services social workers as they came together in the early engagement process–-following a referral for counseling after a report of child abuse or neglect. Recommendations for researchers pursuing this kind of endeavor are discussed throughout, with an emphasis on the potential pathways to connection in conducting practice-based research.

AbstractDavid Skarbek argues that qualitative research methods can analyze institutions by exploiting complex evidence not accessible through quantitative methods. He suggests that well-done case studies and process tracing can meet some of the same tests of inference as statistical methods. Although Skarbek's critique and proposals mirror those of many other authors, including Ronald Coase, he nonetheless makes an important contribution. The brief, cogent, and instructive way he presents his advice and his defense of qualitative methods as a complement to mainstream methods rather than a confrontation, may be more persuasive than more confrontational arguments. As 'datafication' is quickly turning qualitative observations into quantitative data analyzed through machine learning, Skarbek's excellent advice on how to understand what is happening under different institutional settings could not be timelier.

'Ausgehend von den Erfordernissen pädagogischer und sozialarbeiterischer Praxis und entsprechenden Lücken in der gegenwärtigen Forschungslandschaft plädiert der Artikel für eine qualitative und längsschnittlich angelegte Rechtsextremismusforschung. Er zeigt auf, wie im Rahmen 'rekonstruktiver Sozialforschung' unter Wegfall, Umformung oder Zuschnitt der Gütekriterien von Validität, Reliabilität, Objektivität, Repräsentativität und Verallgemeinerung gültige Forschungsergebnisse zu produzieren sind. Als Erhebungsmethodik wird eine qualitative Triangulation mit dem Kern themenzentrierter Leitfadeninterviews vorgeschlagen. Die Fruchtbarkeit des Ansatzes wird anschließend mit Hinweisen auf einige zentrale Resultate belegt'. (Autorenreferat)

Das Lehren und Lernen qualitativer Forschungsmethodik wirft für viele qualitativ arbeitende Sozialwissenschaftler/innen eine Reihe von Fragen und Problemen auf. In diesem Beitrag, mit dem wir ein Symposium zu dieser Thematik auf dem 2. Berliner Methodentreffen im Juli 2006 aufnehmen und weiter entwickeln, sollen einige grundlegende Problemdimensionen skizziert werden. Das Lehren und Lernen qualitativer Methoden ist nicht unabhängig vom Selbstverständnis qualitativer Sozialforschung zu sehen. Wir unterscheiden zwischen einer paradigmatischen und einer situativ-pragmatischen Sichtweise. Mit diesen beiden Auffassungen verbindet sich auch ein unterschiedliches Verständnis der Vermittelbarkeit qualitativer Methoden. Eine pragmatische Auffassung geht eher mit der Annahme der Lehrbarkeit qualitativer Methoden im Sinne einer Technik einher, während sich mit einer paradigmatischen Auffassung eher die (konstruktivistisch geprägte) Vorstellung eines gemeinsamen Einübens methodischen Handwerks verbindet. Schließlich ist hier auch der institutionelle Stellenwert qualitativer Prozeduren zu berücksichtigen, insbesondere in Relation zur Stellung quantitativer Methodenlehre in diversen Lehr- und Lern-Kontexten. Aus diesen Überlegungen leiten sich fünf zentrale Dimensionen der Lehr- und Lernbarkeit qualitativer Methoden ab: Formen der Vermittlung (zwischen Lehrbuchwissen und Cognitive Apprenticeship) und Erfahrungen damit, die institutionellen Kontexte unter Einbeziehung ihrer Entwicklungen und die Rolle außeruniversitärer Methodenvermittlung, die Passung zwischen Person und Methode unter besonderer Berücksichtigung relevanter subjektiver Kompetenzen sowie, als eine besondere Form eines kontemporären Vermittlungskontexts, das Long Distance Learning und seine Implikationen für das Lehren und Lernen qualitativer Methoden.
