AbstractWe describe a young women with Munchausen syndrome whose repertoire of simulated presentations includes mental handicap, bereavement, suicidal ideation, psychosis, epilepsy and acute abdominal emergency. Although this is the first report of Munchausen syndrome presenting as learning disability, there may be many similar unrecognised cases. Mental health professionals need to be aware of the possibility of this diagnosis. Studies are needed to determine the frequency of such presentations and to assess the implications for service planning and provision.

Handloom weaving with a mixture of wool and cotton yarn was common in late nineteenth-century Canada. The hand technology survived using industrial inputs and part-time female labor whose opportunity cost was relatively low in rural areas. The demand for homespun was income-sensitive and reinforced by the cold Canadian climate. The patterns of weaving by men and women differed, but both produced for the market in addition to home consumption. Cloth constituted a significant share of farm production, especially in low-income areas.

THE GROWTH OF ALTERNATIVE MEDIA AS A MEANS TO COUNTER IMAGES IN MAINSTREAM JOURNALISM IS EXAMINED.

This study explores the experiential dimensions of apprenticeship and work as part of the adolescent life phase in fourteenth-century Montpellier on the basis of approximately two hundred surviving notarial contracts. The strong role of family in apprenticeship of young men and women, the acquisition of specific occupational skills, character formation, and the well-being of the apprentice/worker are discussed. Apprenticeship for Montpellier youth represented a lengthy (early teens to late twenties) and elaborate transition between childhood and adulthood.

How dramatic was Martin Luther's impact on the Reformation family? By moving away from a history of politics and theology to the beliefs and practices of common people, scholars drawing from many disciplines paint portraits of Reformation families that differ little from those that preceded and followed them. Available information on household climate, the divorce rate, the social role of women, child-rearing practices, and education lead one to conclude that Martin Luther affected little enduring change in European families.

THE FOCUS OF THIS PAPER IS AN EVALUATION OF THE PROCESS OF CHANGE OCCURRING WITHIN WOMEN'S COMMITTEES IN THE WEST BANK. IT ATTEMPTS TO ANALYZE SOME OF THE CHANGES WHICH HAVE TAKEN PLACE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE INTIFADA IN 1987 IN THE THREE REALMS OF ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, MOBILIZATION STRATEGIES, AND IDEOLOGY, OF THE FOUR COMMITTEES OF THE WEST BANK POLITICAL WOMEN'S MOVEMENT. THE ANALYSIS IS BASED ON 92 INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL ACTIVIST WOMEN AND KEY-INFORMANTS CONDUCTED FROM 1988 TO 1990.

A report on a telephone poll of political attitudes conducted in Tallinn, Estonia, on 21 Aug 1991, the third day of the attempted Soviet coup. A random sample of 206 Estonian & 201 Russian-speaking respondents were asked about support for various political factions & resolutions. Results show that 99% of Estonians & 69% of Russian-speaking people supported Estonian independence. Support for Boris Yeltsin was twice as high among Estonians & among women in both samples. 4 Tables, 1 Appendix, 4 References.

Peoples and natural environments of Latin America and the Caribbean have suffered from centuries of exploitation at the hand of imperialist powers and their local client ruling classes. With the internationalization of the productive circuit of capital, however, ecological destruction, poverty and human misery have become more profound. Throughout Latin America, organizations and movements of environmentalists, urban and rural women, indigenous people, workers, health officials and peasants are engaged in struggles over the ecological, human, and communal conditions of production

The Vietnamese peasant family economy operated according to its own dynamic, which sustained itself and undercut the collective economy. Although the Workers' Party was successful in some early aspects of collectivization, peasant patriarchs ultimately challenged collective institutions, forcing a return to family farming. The mechanism of this success was their careful control of the labor of women and children in small plot, kitchen garden and handicraft activities that, because of socialist pricing policies, were more profitable than the collective production of staples.

Since the late 1960s, the women's movement has been strongly associated with the advancement of women's position in the work force. In spite of antidiscrimination laws, women still earn only about 70 percent of what men do. Three strategies to further reduce the wage gap are considered in detail: affirmative action, pay equity, and policies to make it easier to combine work and family life. Questions are raised about the implications of these strategies for the future of the women's movement.

This article compares the views of men and women employed in hourly production jobs regarding the effects of an innovation on their working conditions, their organization, and the rewards they receive. Gender differences are found on an array of expectations likely to influence the innovation process, including knowledge of and general attitude toward new technology, job security, safety, learning opportunities, training and technical assistance, and rewards. Gender differences persist when education, age, seniority, and relevant characteristics of an employee's current job are controlled.

It traces the background to the cur rent drive towards community care, emphasising the phase of austerity and privatisation inaugurated by the 1988 Griffiths Report. It assesses the likely consequences of the White Paper, now incorporated into a joint par liamentary bill with the government's plans for the health service, giving particular attention to the consequences for women, ethnic minorities and voluntary organisations

As international contacts increase, more and more people find themselves living temporarily or even permanently outside their own societies. Taking two samples of foreign women married to Nigerian and Japanese men who have returned to live in their husband's countries, this paper explores Hughes' propositions on marginality and its reduction. The experiences of these foreign wives suggest that the same individuals use different mechanisms in different situations, and that different forms of marginality call for different reduction mechanisms.
