Communities are strategic in a variety of ways towards the provision and management of education as well as teaching, learning and enforcement processes. However, communities play a variety of roles in the enhancement of democratic practice and stability. This paper discusses how communities can be involved in the promotion and management of education as well as the development of the capacity of communities to assume increased role in handling the entire education environments towards enhanced funding, management and monitoring under democratic settings. Method used in this study is the content analysis of community and democratic participation in various forms and dimensions in order to show the challenges and prospects in the Nigerian setting. Results in the study indicate that community participation in education and democratic participation must be inherently connected to each other for stable polity and good governance, as well as expansion of educational and other services. It is recommended that partnership and interaction between community and government in education must be built to provide initiative, responsibility, sensitivity for participation in education and governance designed to prevent break in communication and breakdown of law and order.

Vocational education and training (VET) is defined in general practice as technical education and skills training mainly for jobs that are based on manual or practical activities. According to China's 1996 Vocational Education Law, VET is deemed a key component of China's educational system, and an important means to promote employment, economic growth and social advancement. The Chinese government has attached great importance to VET since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. The 1996 Vocational Education Law and the State Council's 2002 Decision on Vigorously Promoting the Reform and Development of VET represents the government's renewed effort at supporting VET in the era of reform and open-up. In recent years, additional reform measures have been introduced to modernize the existing VET system in line with the readjustment of China's development strategy and industrial structure.

Citizenship education, defined as learning to live together, requires agreement on certain common principles. One central purpose of a state education system is the transmission of common normative standards such as the human rights and fundamental freedoms that underpin liberal democratic societies. The paper identifies the conceptual roots of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in the sociological concept of utopia and Enlightenment cosmopolitanism. In the UDHR, the vision of freedoms that may promote human flourishing provides a precise way of conceptualising limits on state power. Whilst human rights is not a general theory, the concept has the hugely beneficial property of enabling people whose value systems are diverse and apparently incompatible, nonetheless to recognise and accept common standards and principles that make living in society possible. The implications of this are that human rights education is rightfully recognised as an essential component of citizenship education. © 2012 Copyright University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education.

This topical book explores the ally perspective in advocating for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer and Inter-sex (LGBTQI+) human rights across American, Canadian, and Australian educational contexts. This book aims to clarify the terms and dynamics of mobilizing heterosexual and cisgender privilege in the interests of promoting safe, welcoming and inclusive educational communities for all stake holders, particularly those students who self- identify as LGBTQI+. By highlighting concrete examples of allies engaged in participatory collaborative research, and by investigating the historical and theoretical dimensions of ally work more generally, this volume presents a comprehensive research account of allies' role in education, advocacy and activism. In recent years, active shooter incidents have taken the lives of many innocent students, faculty, and staff in the school system. In the past 13 years alone, there has been over 160 such incidents in the U.S. (Blair, Martaindale, & Nichols, 2014). In an attempt to combat these situations, society has started the legislature process of passing or trying to pass laws allowing for students and staff to carry firearms on college and university campuses. The process shows a hope of reducing the number of casualties and the time it takes for law enforcement to arrive. Although the theory does seem to make sense, what is not looked at are the issues that may arise from allowing such measures to be passed. These issues include students, barely adults, now being allowed to carry guns on campus and in dorms. Society must take a closer look at these issues and understand why it would be more important to push stricter gun laws and provide more training for law enforcement to handle these situations. Officers are already in the stages of learning new techniques and strategies to combat active shooter situations, such as ALERRT training. This type of training will assist in the foundation people already have in handling these types of situations. Officers will be better equipped to respond and give training to the public, in order to better prepare citizens. If society can take more time to not react, it may better help all the issues and see that firearms should not be allowed on higher educational campuses.

Informatization of education has created a base for the transition to a new level, digitalization is aimed at training specialists who are guaranteed to be in demand in the labor market, easily and fluently own mobile and Internet technologies, and also focused on continuous learning (advanced training) through e-learning. Digital technology in the modern world is not only a tool, but also an environment of existence, which opens up new opportunities: learning at any convenient time, continuing education, the ability to design individual educational routes, from consumers of electronic resources to become creators. However, the digital environment requires teachers of a different mentality, perception of the picture of the world, completely different approaches and forms of work with students. The teacher becomes not only a carrier of knowledge that he shares with the students, but also a guide through the digital world. He must have digital literacy, the ability to create and apply content through digital technologies, including computer programming skills, search, information sharing, and communication.
