The rise of democracy was a major preoccupation of the 19th century. The experience of the United States, including its contradictions, exclusions, and inconsistencies, was central to how contemporaries discussed and understood this phenomenon. Though the government was all-male by design, probing questions about the place of women within American democracy emerged and extended across print media, both in and outside activist circles.

A paradox underlies this text. Curiously, the importance of citizenship since its introduction some 4000 years ago in the Ancient Near East is only partly grasped. Ever since, citizenship has always been circumscribed by ascribed markers of status, such as slavery in Greece and Rome, the exclusion of women from civic life across millennia, and the discrimination against religious and racial minorities in nation-states.
