Underlying the work of the Campbell Collaboration (C2) is the Sociological, Psychological, Educational, and Criminological Trials Register (C2-SPECTR). A Web-accessible database, C2-SPECTR is unique in the world. With more than 11,600 citations, it is an international register on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or possible trials. This article describes the framework for populating C2-SPECTR, other registers that are prospective, and the practical issues of implementation. The authors discuss the growing importance of RCTs and the recent histories of organizations that have influenced this growth—the Cochrane Collaboration, the C2, and the What Works Clearinghouse. Next, the authors describe the origins of C2-SPECTR and plans to populate it and a prospective register. The authors conclude with plans for implementing the surveillance systems and the anticipated challenges in actualizing these plans.
In "Regional Integration in Africa: What Role for South Africa", Henri Bah, Zondi Siphamandla and Andre Mbata Mangu reflect on African integration and the contribution of post-apartheid South Africa. From their different scientific background, they demonstrate that despite some progress made under the African Union that superseded the Organisation of African Unity, Africa is still lagging behind in terms of regional integration and South Africa, which benefitted from the rest of the continent in her struggle against apartheid, has not as yet played a major role in this process. Apart from contributing to advancing knowledge, the book should be a recommended read for all those interested in African regional integration and the relationships between Africa and post-apartheid South Africa.-- Back cover
The objectif of this paper is to draw attention to the highly dualistic nature of the agricultural sector in Swaziland and its implications for rural development strategy. The paper is composed of four sections. Firstly a brief overview of the economy is presented. Secondly, a structural break-down of the dichotomies existing within the agricultural sector demontrates the vast disparities between the two sub-sectors. Thirdly, drawing from the findings of a recently conducted rural homestead survey, the degree of the homestead's independence of the wage sector is shown. Finally, some of the issues relevant to the design of a more universal approach to rural development are considered
