"This book offers an academically rigorous examination of the biological, psychological, social and ecclesiastical processes that allowed sexual abuse in the Catholic Church to happen and then be covered up. The collected essays provide a means to better assess systemic wrongdoing in religious institutions, so that they can be more effectively held to account. "The Orthodox Christian tradition has all too often been sidelined in conversations around contemporary religion. Despite being distinct from Protestantism and Catholicism in both theology and practice, it remains an underused setting for academic inquiry into current lived religious practice. This collection, therefore, seeks to redress this imbalance by investigating modern manifestations of Orthodox Christianity through an explicitly gender-sensitive gaze. By addressing attitudes to gender in this context, it fills major gaps in the literature on both religion and gender. Starting with the traditional teachings and discourses around gender in the Orthodox Church, the book moves on to demonstrate the diversity of responses to those narratives that can be found among Orthodox populations in Europe and North America. Using case studies from several countries, with both large and small Orthodox populations, contributors use an interdisciplinary approach to address how gender and religion interact in contexts such as, iconography, conversion, social activism and ecumenical relations, among others. "'Secularization' sounds simple, a decline in the power of religion. Yet, the history of the term is controversial and multi-faceted; it has been useful to both religious believers and non-believers and has been deployed by scholars to make sense of a variety of aspects of cultural and social change. This book will introduce the reader to this variety and show how secularization bears on the contemporary politics of religion. Secularization addresses the sociological classics' ambivalent accounts of the future of religion, later and more robust sociological claims about religious decline, and the most influential philosophical secularization thesis, which says that the dominant ideas of modern thought are in fact religious ones in a secularized form. This book investigates the substantial and growing contribution which African Independent and Pentecostal Churches are making to sustainable development in all its manifold forms. Moreover, this volume seeks to elucidate how these churches reshape the very notion of sustainable development and contribute to the decolonisation of development. Fostering both overarching and comparative perspectives, the book includes chapters on West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso) and Southern Africa (Zimbabwe and South Africa). It aims to open up a subfield focused on African Initiated Christianity within the religion and development discourse, substantially broadening the scope of the existing literature. Witness to Marvels traces the development of a unique genre of Sufi-inspired Bengali romances called pir kathas, whose protagonists and plots are wholly fictive. For five centuries these fabulations have parodied indigenous and Hindu textual traditions. Both mimicking and mocking, these parodies adopted a subjunctive tone, exploring a magical world of 'what-if'. They created an Islam-inflected space within a traditional Bengali cultural environment without trying to legislate what ideally 'should be' according to tropes common to Islamic history, theology, and law. The tales' discursive arena, the imaginaire, delineated the realm of possibility for how these tales might exercise the imagination to integrate Hindu and Islamic cosmologies. Tales insinuated themselves into locally relevant discourses through elaborate intertextual connections, subtly shifting presuppositions about the way the world works and what counts as religious authority. As Allah looked on from heaven, the tales routinely assigned Sufi saints, both pirs and bibis, to the pivotal role of avatar, the periodic descent of divinity, equating them to the Hindu god Narayan. Adopting a semiotic strategy to interpret these tales yields a bold new perspective on the subtle ways Islam assumed its distinctive form in Bengal and suggests how we need to reimagine conversion in this region.

Die Untersuchung zu Carl Schmitts Intention in seinem politischen Denken steht – mit methodischem Bezug auf die Cambridge School – im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit. Die Arbeit strukturiert Schmitts Gedankengut in die vier Kategorien Politische Philosophie, Politische Theologie, Staatswissenschaft und Internationale Beziehungen. Die Arbeit stellt die These auf, dass Schmitt als ein Vorläufer der Globalisierungskritiker gesehen werden kann, welcher die Entmachtung der Staatssouveränität in der globalen Welt hinterfragt. Mit dem Begriff Globalisierung ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Demokratisierung des Rechtsverfahrens in der Innenpolitik und die Verrechtlichung des Naturzustandes zwischen den Staaten in der Außenpolitik gemeint, aus der im Habermasschen Sinne die Weltgesellschaft entsteht. »Globalization and the Political« The focus of this research is the investigation of Carl Schmitt's intention in his political ideas. This work structures Schmitt's ideas into four categories – namely, political philosophy, political theology, jurisprudence, and international relations – in order that Schmitt's intention in his works, out of which a coherent pattern does not necessarily arise, might be crystallized. This thesis argues that Schmitt was a forerunner of globalization critics. Seyed Alireza Mousavi, geboren im Iran, studierte Politikwissenschaft in seiner Heimat, wo er sein Bachelor- und Masterstudium abschloss. Er promovierte an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Mousavi hat bei der ersten Ausgabe des Journals Carl-Schmitt-Studien mitgewirkt, in der sein Aufsatz mit dem Titel »Staatsbewusstsein und schiitischer Islam: Die Analyse Ayatollah Ruhollah Chomeinis politischer Gedanken im Kontext von Carl Schmitts Konzeptionen« veröffentlicht wurde. Er unterrichtete am Institut für Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Jena im Sommersemester 2015 »Politische Philosophie im schiitischen Islam« und im Wintersemester 2016 »Die Politische Theorie von Carl Schmitt«.

Teilen (können) ist das neue Haben (wollen)? So scheint es bisweilen, wenn man die immer größer werdende Zahl von Veröffentlichungen zur Sharing Economy betrachtet. Nicht wenige sprechen bereits von einer weiteren industriellen Revolution, ermöglicht durch die fortschreitende Digitalisierung der Ökonomie und nicht zuletzt durch das Internet. Der Grundgedanke ist bestechend: Durch das Internet sind Informationen über die temporäre Verfügbarkeit von Gütern schier unbegrenzt und sehr kostengünstig verfügbar, bei digitalen Gütern unterliegt sogar deren Vermehrung dieser Logik. Lösen also Tauschen und Teilen den exklusiven Eigentumsanspruch ab? Wird vielleicht sogar der lang gehegte Traum von einer Welt wahr, in der Besitztümer nicht nur einigen wenigen, sondern vielen – vielleicht nahezu allen – Menschen zur Verfügung stehen? Kann damit eines Tages sogar das Besitzstreben überholt sein, das von vielen heftig kritisiert, von anderen dagegen seit Adam Smith als ethisch vorzugswürdig angesehen wird? Oder werden hier nur altbekannte ökonomische Erkenntnisse in neuer Verpackung angeboten?
