This study consists in a critical approach to Holloway's 'Open Marxism', as presented in his Change the world without taking power.
In defense of the so-called revolutionary Marxist tradition, represented by radical Marxist thinkers as Lenin, Trotsky, Luxemburg, Gramsci and Lukács, the author strongly opposes Holloway's argument that scientific Marxism in toto succumbed actually to the bourgeois ideology of science, state, power etc. Consequently, this analysis focuses on how Holloway himself mistreats crucial concepts such as 'science', 'state', 'party' and 'power'.
Victim and fanatic of a theology of Negation, Holloway follows an abstract 'either-or' mode of thinking and arguing, and fails to treat dialectically critical relations as those among science and ideology, state and revolution, movement and party.
According to this study, Holloway's anti-capitalistic rhetoric and post-modernist methodology are nothing more than expressions of an old-fashioned anarchist ideology, against which classical Marxism, adapted to contemporary needs and conditions, can function as a radical critique.
As the author suggests, searching for the meaning of the revolution nowadays, Holloway confuses the Marxist concept of science with the positivistic one and fatally mistakes a political caricature of Marxism, i.e. a Blanquist or/ and a Stalinist misinterpretation of the Marxist theory of revolution, for revolutionary Marxism itself.

In this important and original book, eminent scholar Barbara Herrnstein Smith describes, assesses, and reflects upon a set of contemporary intellectual projects involving science, religion, and human cognition. One, which Smith calls "the New Naturalism," is the effort to explain religion on the basis of cognitive science. Another, which she calls "the New Natural Theology," is the attempt to reconcile natural-scientific accounts of the world with traditional religious belief. These two projects, she suggests, are in many ways mirror images-or "natural reflections"-of each other. Examining these and related efforts from the perspective of a constructivist-pragmatist epistemology, Smith argues that crucial aspects of belief-religious and other-that remain elusive or invisible under dominant rationalist and computational models are illuminated by views of human cognition that stress its dynamic, embodied, and interactive features. She also demonstrates how constructivist understandings of the formation and stabilization of knowledge-scientific and other-alert us to similarities in the springs of science and religion that are elsewhere seen largely in terms of difference and contrast. In Natural Reflections, Smith develops a sophisticated approach to issues often framed only polemically. Recognizing science and religion as complex, distinct domains of human practice, she also insists on their significant historical connections and cognitive continuities and offers important new modes of engagement with each of them

Is it acceptable from an ethical point of view to use stem cells from human embryos for scientific research and clinical therapy? And what are the weaknesses and strengths of various opinions and positions when they are critically evaluated? These are the main problems dealt with in this book. The various chapters as a whole give a comprehensive, many-sided and balanced discussion of the subject. The book contains contributions from biological, medical, social, political, philosophical and theological perspectives. The authors have been chosen because of their professional competence, many of them being respected scholars on a top international level. They give an updated contribution from their own discipline in order to enlighten the different aspects of the common theme. The authors cover various positions and evaluations with regard to the question of the use of embryonic stem cells for research and therapy. The book is written for several audiences: a) scholars and professionals working with stem cell research or with the ethical questions arising from this field (people from biology, medicine, law, philosophy, theology etc.), b) advanced and graduate students within the same professional disciplines and c) politicians and the general public interested in the burning ethical problems which are intensively debated in many countries.

Annotation, Who speaks for Islam? To whom do Muslims turn when they look for guidance? To what extent do individual scholars and preachers exert religious authority, and how can it be assessed? The upsurge of Islamism has lent new urgency to these questions, but they have deeper roots and a much longer history, and they certainly should not be considered in the light of present concerns only. The present volume - grown out of an international symposium at the Free University, Berlin in 2002 - is not so much concerned with religious authority, but with religious authorities, men and women claiming, projecting and exerting religious authority within a given context. It addresses issues such as the relationship of knowledge, conduct and charisma, the social functions of the schools of law and theology, and the efforts on the part of governments and rulers to organize religious scholars and to implement state-centred hierarchies. The volume focuses on Middle Eastern Muslim majority societies in the period from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, and the individual papers offer case studies elucidating important aspects of the wider phenomenon.
