This book presents new developments in Scandinavian memory cultures related to World War II and the Holocaust by combining this focus with the perspective of history didactics. The theoretical framework of historical consciousness offers an approach linking individual and collective uses and re-uses of the past to the question how history can and should be taught. It also offers some examples of good practice in this field. The book promotes a teaching practice which, in taking the social constructivist notions of historical consciousness as a starting point, can contribute to self-reflecting and critical thinking – being fundamental for any democratic political culture.

This book presents the history of African business in Zimbabwe from the early petty traders and bus operators to the new black business elite of the post-independence era. It offers a picture of indigenous business, the many adversities entrepreneurs had to overcome, their shrewdness and determination, their hand-to-mouth type of management, the extensive kinship obligations they had to fulfill and the ostentatious lifestyle some of them fancied. It does not conceal less pleasant aspects of African business such as the witchcraft practices surrounding it, the occasional disloyalty of relatives and the political opportunism of certain flamboyant figures. Case studies demonstrate how successful businessmen managed to break away from the vicious circle of unsound management and poor performance to establish sizeable and lasting operations. In the last part of his study the author portrays the rise of a black bourgeoisie after independence and the widening gap between the large number of small and micro business and a well connected business elite.
