Demographers have often lamented their field's reputation as one of "all methods and no theory." Pushed by advances in computer technology and pulled by the appeal of being the "hardest," most scientistic of the social sciences, the field has grown ever more sophisticated in mathematical technique. At the same time, theory has languished, becoming increasingly narrow and divorced from the realities of a rapidly changing post-Cold War world (McNicoll 1992). Leading members of the field routinely bemoan this state of affairs, though proposals for remaking the discipline are rarely offered (Preston 1993; Keyfitz 1993).

Originally published in 1970. Two major changes have characterised science in the twentieth century. Firstly, there has been its rapid growth. Secondly, and central to the theme his book - science is no longer mainly an academic activity carried on in universities. Industry will soon be the largest employer of scientists. This book deals with issues of bureaucracy in science threatening its creativity and the failure of industry to recruit the best graduates, as well as what attracts people to study science

This text presents science-engaged theology that encourages theologians to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines in a highly localised manner in order to make concrete claims with accountability and show how theological realities are entangled with the empirical world.

Max Weber's essays Science as a Vocation (1917) & Politics as a Vocation (1919) raised themes that Ernest Gellner later addresses with a more sanguine attitude. Weber seeks a morality specific to the pursuit of science & politics in the distinction he draws between vocation & profession. Weber's conception of the multiplicity of values leads him to vacillate between ethical pluralism & nihilism. This moral indeterminacy leads Weber to embrace nationalism & its symptomatic conflicts such as WWI. Gellner finds a moral meaning in science & scientific rationality that mediates the value pluralism of modernity. Gellner has a more thorough understanding of religion & nationalism in the modern world & accommodates them in his multilateral vision of the world without embracing them as means to salvation. 10 References. Dabei hat die spekulative Verfremdung unserer Welt immer auch metaphorischen Charakter als sozialpolitischer Gegenwartskommentar und Reflexion über die Conditio humana. Isabella Hermann zeigt verschiedene Definitionszugänge in die Science Fiction auf und präsentiert eine kurze Genregeschichte bis in die jüngste Gegenwart. Einen Schwerpunkt legt sie auf gattungs-typische Themen wie intelligente Maschinen und Weltraumkolonisation, die aktuell scheinbar von der Realität eingeholt werden

The last two decades have witnessed growing attention to the "Canadianization" of the field of International Relations. In this article, we forward a novel approach to testing the influence of domestic factors in Canadian International Relations. By analyzing the reading lists of comprehensive examinations from Canadian doctoral programs in International Relations, we can understand the ways in which Canadian institutions' reading lists construct the hierarchy of the field's journals. Among these journals, those based in the United States are most frequently assigned, with others hosted in the UK and around Europe. Canadian journals are rarely assigned to reading lists. French-language journals are also rarely assigned to reading lists, even in francophone institutions, and when they are, the journals are much more likely to be hosted in France than in Canada. We offer a series of guiding questions for future consideration of the "Canadianization" of International Relations education in Canada.
