Unter den zeitgenössischen Gestalten der politischen Geschichte der Karibik und des Panafrikanismus nimmt Markus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940) eine undankbare Stellung ein. Er wurde als Wahnsinniger, Possenreißer oder gefährlicher Rassist diskreditiert. Seine politischen Leistungen sind darüber fast in Vergessenheit geraten. Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht eine Rekonstruktion von Garveys Denken unter dem systematischen Gesichtspunkt der Rassenfrage. Der Autor geht davon aus, daß es sich bei Garvey Sozialphilosophie nicht um eine rassistische Theorie im engeren Sinne der Rassendiskriminierung handelt, sondern um eine Antwort auf existierende Rassenprobleme. Garvey fordert seine Anhänger auf, die westliche Kultur als Erbstück der altägyptischen und äthiopischen Kulturen zu betrachten. Die Schwarzen sollten die westlichen Kulturen als Teil ihrer eigenen geschichtlichen Leistung ansehen. Nach Ansicht des Autors könnte diese Haltung mit dem von Jean-Paul Sartre geprägten Begriff des "antirassistischen Rassismus" charakterisiert werden. (KA)

Dr. Marjorie Millace Whiteman died at the age of 87, at her home in Liberty Center, Ohio, on July 6, 1986. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the recipient of LL.B. (1927) and J.S.D. (1928) degrees from Yale Law School (where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal), she was also a Carnegie fellow in international law. Later, Miss Whiteman served as a research associate with the Research Commission on Latin America at Columbia University, and then, in 1929, began her distinguished career with the Department of State, winning recognition throughout the world as an authority on international law.
