; Personality of government official from among top executives significantly affects the character of his administrative strategies, especially in Russia. That's why biographies of Russian governors of the past are of great scientific interest. Political biographies of Taurida governors in the period when this governorate itself was very recently established are of particular interest to both historians and political scientists. The subject matter of our article is biography of a statesman Dmitry Naryshkin, who was Taurida governor in the first half of the 19th c., his relationship with his cousin, patron and immediate superior in the administrative hierarchy of the Russian Empire Count Mikhail Vorontsov. So, in our article, using source analysis and prosopologic approach, we trace both early stages of Dmitry Naryskin's career and the characteristic features of his activities as Taurida governor. During this period, Count Mikhail Vorontsov, who was Novorossiya Governor-General, played the main role in region governance. All Naryshkin's administrative decisions were made only after consultation with Vorontsov. So, Taurida governor was only the administrant of Vorontsov's projects and plans, and rarely showed his own initiative. Nevertheless, during Dmitry Naryshkin's governorship, Simferopol became a true center of the province, and the challenging bit of road between Simferopol and Alushta was constructed. Based on archival documents and memoirs of contemporaries, we conclude that Dmitry Naryshkin was feckless administrator, but Mikhail Vorontsov's attention to Taurida Governorate contributed to the stable development of the region.
The paper presents Palestinian literature as a unique example of nationalistic literature inspired by the political milieu and historical context, aimed at reviving and regaining the lost essence of the Palestinian identity. It argues that there are supra-literary factors involved in writing about Palestine adhered to, more or less, by most writers. It explains that writers who write about Palestine, as well as readers, do not start with a blank page; writers have a set of themes to choose from, readers, moreover, expect to read a story along the lines of an optimistic and futuristic framework: A positive hero(ine) with a positive conclusion beyond all odds. The paper also discusses the general characteristics of Palestinian literature and its various subgenres, titles and their thematic implications on writers, stories and readers. The paper provides a brief critical overview on how writing about Palestine is viewed as part of the resistance and a contribution to the national cause. The paper presents a real life example in the biography of Ghada al-Karmi, the typical hybrid Palestinian refugee stressing that it is not the "whereabouts" of the Palestinian authors which shape their literary vision, it is legacy of their Palestinian origin and identity that is nurtured in their being but ceased to exist in real life. It concludes with stressing that the particular and unique nature of Palestinian literature should not hinder the audience from appreciating its value. National and ideological literature, unlike the stereotypical belief, can still walk hand in hand with creativity, both sharing in the presentation of a memorable human suffering.
This paper is directed first at identifying where and by whom military influences or topics manifested themselves in the periodical press'ns coverage of India in the period up to the Indian Rebellion. How such manifestations changed over time, as well as the convergence of Anglo-Indian and British newspapers and magazines on Indian topics, will form an important component of this study. Stemming from these initial enquiries, I will further suggest that the model often employed to comprehend such representations —namely 'orientalism' —is, as it is often configured, too simplistic and reductionist to account for all the forces at work in the production of images of India. Instead, the mid-Victorian image of India was produced by a very fractured discourse. Racial stereotypes and affirmations of British superiority were certainly to the forefront, but these were frequently inflected by quite separate agenda'ns, such as the military's pursuit of political and professional status and influence, publishers' search for profits, and the quest for suitable middle-class role models. Moreover, it was a discourse constrained by the dominant contemporary literary conventions and tropes, notably the historical romance in fiction and didacticism in history and biography. Yet there is one strand that runs through these various agendas and literary strategies and that is the one provided by the Indian army. India was by the third decade of the nineteenth-century as much a military as it was a commercial site. In 1850, the then reigning governor-general, Lord Dalhousie, was reminded by John Lawrence of this fact when the latter insisted that 'public opinion is essentially military in India. Military views, feelings and interests are therefore paramount'.
; In this article our imaginary and true knowledge of the biography of the author of the well-known Cossack chronicle Samoilo Velichko are investigated. On the basis of the analysis of a historiography the history of emergence of myths, and also the most famous versions of the biography of Velichko is shown. For example, we study the circumstances of the termination of his service in General office of Zaporizhian Army. The author introduces new archival documents from the Russian governmental archive of ancient arts and from the archive of the Institute of History of Russian Academy of Art in St. Petersburg and represents own interpretations of various facts. As a result, we obtain more exact data on study, a social origin, marital status, and also the «misfortune» which has happened to Velichko and put an end to his career of the army bureaucrat. Contrary to the most popular opinion in the historiography it is now possible to take for granted that Velichko didn't lose his position after V. Kochubey's disgrace, but remained on service up to his capture in December, 1708. And moreover, he was in army of the hetman I. Mazepa after he joint Swedes. The detailed analysis of the military company of November-December, 1708 allow to make the assumption of circumstances of «misfortune» which happened to S. Velichko. Most likely, he was taken prisoner in Romnakh, during the urgent departure of I. Mazepa's troops from there. Besides, the revealed documents confirm availability of close ties of Velichko with Zaporizhian Host and in particular with the Host's clerk G. Bovguley. And it is only the myth that S. Velichko taught V. Kochubey's children.
; Dr. Franz von Ottenthal served as a General Practitioner in Sand, in the South Tyrolean Tauferer Ahrntal from 1847 to 1899, over a period lasting more than 50 years. From 1861 until 1882, in a period of great regional and imperial tensions, he even was member of the Tyrolean Landtag (diet). In 1837/8 he began his medical studies at the University of Vienna, where important physicians from the "Zweite Wiener Medizinische Schule" like Carl von Rokitansky, Joseph Skoda and Philipp Semmelweis were teaching. Ottenthal worked as a medical expert in Windisch-Matrei (East Tyrol) for almost two years. Then he went back home and became a General Practitioner in Neumelans, the residence of his family. This biography treats particularly the career as a physician, his engagement in the medical service and the difficulties during the collaboration with medical authorities. On the other side it contains further an analysis of the medical records and the letters of his patients for a better patient view. Further this biography discusses open questions like medical development, fees, properties of a noble rural physicians in the second part of the 19 century and the competition with other physicians and healers. A big space is dedicated to the treatment of mental illness. Ottenthal wasn't a 'psychiatrist', but he was as well responsible for the care and the treatment of persons with mental disease. With a report by a physician began - crossing a lot of other institutions - the way in the asylum. The Ottenthal family, whose everyday life has tried to be reconstructed along private correspondence, is a typical example of a family from the second part of the 19th century between nobility and bourgeoisie characterized on the one hand by qualification, know-how and a lucrative job and on the other by a nobility title, fortune and landed property. Franz von Ottenthal wasn't a famous physician like Rudolf Virchow, Robert Koch or Carl von Rokitansky. Nevertheless he was a modern, political engaged, self-confident practitioner and he is a very good example for the fusion of nobility and bourgeoisie in a rural life of the 19th century. This publication should be a contribution to the exploration of rural medical practice, which is little known and often poor of sources. It will even be a starting-point for further comparative studies of other medical biographies and legacies.
Although more than a little controversial, Mary Kaldor's academic work and ideas have both stimulated and influenced debate in the Pentagon, the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, and beyond. How did this come about? And how did Kaldor reach the conclusions outlined in her seminal books? Melinda Rankin traces the evolution of Kaldor's work, revealing how her thinking developed from her years as an anti-Cold War activist and scholar in the 1970s-1980s, through her direct experiences of war in the Balkans and Caucasus, to her present support for rights-based international law enforcement

At once a classic account of the ravages of mental illness and a major American autobiography, A Mind That Found Itself tells the story of a young man who is gradually enveloped by a psychosis. His well-meaning family commits him to a series of mental hospitals, but he is brutalized by the treatment, and his moments of fleeting sanity become fewer and fewer. His ultimate recovery is a triumph of the human spirit. The publication of A Mind That Found Itself did for the American mental health movement what Thomas Paineís Common Sense did for the American Revolution. Moreover, it grips the ima
