Government policies in the areas of education and health have deeply important and far reaching consequences for individuals. It is therefore imperative that such policies are informed by evidence coming from careful and detailed scientific research. This thesis aims to provide such evidence for two important subtopics underneath the broad umbrella of health and education. The _first_ of these subtopics is the study of a crucial part of students' educational experiences: their peers. The _second_ of these subtopics is the phenomenon of income related health inequalities, which describe the pervasive difference in health by income. Specifically, the chapters of this thesis aim to shed light on how and why the ability of one's peers can affect academic performance, the patterns of interaction between native and foreign students at university, and the relationship between income related health inequalities and economic conditions.

This article draws on the results from 18 round-table discussions and a symposium that involved community, education, and government stakeholders in building a vision for quality, equitable ESL education. The findings suggest six pillars of effective ESL education: comprehensive programming; responsive funding allocation; cultural competence; networking, collaboration, and coordination; capacity-building and advocacy; and effective leadership. Also examined in this article are the notion of the educational entitlement of ESL learners and the roles of community, education, and government stakeholders in building effective ESL education.

This paper investigates the education-earnings relationship in Pakistan, drawing on the Pakistan Integrated Household Surveys 1998/99 and 2001/02. The analysis has three main goals: to examine the labor market returns to education amongst wage-employed, self-employed and agricultural workers; to examine the labor market returns to literacy and numeracy skills for these categories of workers; and to analyze the pattern of returns to education along the earnings distribution. We also investigate the shape of the education/ earnings relationship. The analysis is done separately by gender and age group, and attempts to address the usual biases when estimating returns to education. Finally, we investigate how key results have changed between 1998/99 and 2001/02.
In order to transform the entire ecosystem of public services through the use of information technology, the Government of India has launched the Digital India program with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The main aim is to make a transparent and responsive government via e-governance and to ensure the e-service delivery in various sectors. This program has nine pillars each focusing of certain growth areas. These pillars are transforming the system of higher education and interdisciplinary research by marking their significance in easing access to the services. Launched schemes and agendas are boosting the growth in the education and research field. But the problem is the lack of proper implementation and awareness among the targeted population. Government has to make the schemes to reach the clientele and ensure that the service delivery system and visions were fulfilled properly. In addition, it's our duty to use the services of digital India up-to is maximum extent and there is a need to find the ways to generate it's benefit in higher education and interdisciplinary research.Â

International education has been a growing field in the US since the beginning of major exchange activity with the establishment of the Fulbright-Hays Fellowships after WWII. In its various aspects in the US--exchange of American & foreign students, faculty, leaders, & specialists--international education assists a minimum of 250,000 individuals each year to study, teach, or perform research. Worldwide, the number of exchanges is several times this total. Factors that have promoted the growth of large scale exchange, such as the new wealth of resource-rich nations, diminishing dominance of the US, changing attitudes toward education, & interdependence of nations, are examined. The role of these factors in determining the future of exchange of discussed. Modified HA.

This article challenges the well-established finding that persons with higher levels of education are more likely to marry outside their own ethnic group. The empirical research upon which that finding is based has been dominated by studies of groups of either immigrant or low socio-economic status. We revisit the question by examining census of population data on two minorities - Protestants in the Republic of Ireland and the Swedish-speaking Finns - which are indigenous, traditionally of high socio-economic status and have strong communal institutions. For this type of minority, we reject the hypothesis that persons with higher levels of education are more likely to form intermarriages. We explain our finding in terms of the association between level of education and social integration into the minority sub-culture. Our findings also provide insights into the process whereby after national independence the high socio-economic status of formerly politically dominant minorities is maintained.
This paper examined peace education as a catalyst for sustainable development in South-South, Nigeria. The rate of conflicts and violence has increased tremendously in Nigeria with the twist of militancy, youth restrictiveness, kidnapping and Boko Haram. This situation has made households, communities and institutions to relocate for safety and survival. The South-South zone of Nigeria, the area that holds the financial strength of the country due to her oil wealth, has steadily witnessed conflicts and violence since 2010 resulting in downward economic trend with its attendant consequences. This ugly trend has therefore made the demand for peace education imperative. Information was obtained through secondary source. The ideas and opinions on peace education and sustainable development obtained were analysed qualitatively leading to the conclusion that peace education is one solution to the problem of the South-South region of Nigeria, and with the suggestion that it should be planned and domesticated to inculcate the culture of peace in schools and national life.Key words: peace, peace education, violence, sustainable development

The current paper is fused from two papers delivered in separate events: "A Mindanao Historian's Views On the Basic Issues of the GRP-MILF Peace Process," delivered during the Peace Process Exchange Workshop hosted by the Hiroshima University Partnership for Peacebuilding and Capacity Development (HiPeC) from 30 July to 5 August 2012, and "Peace Process and Peace Education for Development," delivered during the Teaching Enriched History and Bridging Cultures: In Search of Peace in Mindanao, Philippines" hosted by the Mindanao State University–Marawi at Crystal Inn, Iligan City, last 21 June 2013. In this invited paper, I draw on my many years of experience as an academic, peace advocate, and member of the government peace panel in talks with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) from 1993 to 1996 and with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) from 2004 to 2008. I have also added a few reflections given the recent developments in the Bangsamoro Basic Law and the Mamasapano incident.
